BEDFORD FACTORY NOW UNION SHOP

Employees at the Wheelabrator Abrasives Inc. plant in Bedford took the final step Wednesday night toward becoming a United Steel Workers of America union shop.

Members of the newly organized Local 14440-2 voted at a 4-to-1 margin to ratify a three-year contract with the French-owned manufacturer of sandblasting grit, according to union spokesman Eddie Lowery. Lowery couldn't say what the exact vote was, but said the plant has 37 employees.

He said highlights of the contract include:

Medical coverage paid for in full by the company.

A production bonus based on tonnage that will increase to $1.19 per hour for every employee over the life of the contract.

An hourly wage increase of 27 cents per hour in the second year of the agreement, and 28 cents an hour in the third year.

An additional paid personal holiday, bringing the total to 11 per year.

Spencer Adsit, a spokesman for Wheelabrator, said the company is pleased with the contract.

"Everything we've seen indicates we're going to be able to work together to run a viable, productive plant," Adsit said.
