Beitzel, who graduated from VMI in 1972, spent two years as an admissions counselor there after he graduated before earning a master's degree at James Madison University. He was assistant director of admissions and financial aid officer at VMI from 1975 to 1982.
He has held his position at Radford since 1985.
The appointment comes during transition at Radford, as acting President Charles Owens places improved academics at the top of his list of goals. Beitzel had been named chairman of a committee that will hammer out the university's first-ever admissions policy.
Beitzel said his decision to go to VMI has nothing to do with the transition under way at Radford.
