2 TECH PLAYERS TRANSFER

Basketball players Delwyn Dillard and Dwayne Archbold have left Virginia Tech to transfer to other schools in the hope of getting more playing time.

Dillard, a 6-foot-5 forward from Sussex, will attend Alleghany Community College in Cumberland, Md. Archbold, a 6-7 forward from Staten Island, N.Y., said he will attend American International College in Springfield, Mass. Both players would have been red-shirt sophomores.

Dillard played in nine games last season, scoring a total of seven points. Archbold played in only one game.

The loss of the two players reduced the Tech roster to 11 for the 1994-95 season.

At Hot Springs, four-time winner Moss Beecroft of Newport News fired a 4-under-par 67 over The Homestead's Cascades course Thursday to capture medalist honors in the Virginia State Senior Amateur qualifying.

Beecroft's score was the lowest round in the 43-year history of the tournament and let him finish qualifying play two shots ahead of Staunton's Frank Summers Jr.

Beecroft, who shot a 75 Wednesday, finished with a 1-under 142.

Summers, who shot 71 Wednesday on the Lower Cascades, had a 73 for a 1-over 144.

Harold Coates of Palmyra was third with 146, while Manny Hunter of Suffolk posted a 147. Hubert Votts of Fairfax and Wayne Jackson of Newport News each had 148s.

The 31 low scorers join defending champion Jim Alexander of Lynchburg for two rounds of match play today. Two additional match-play rounds Saturday will cut the field to two. Those players meet in an 18-hole championship round Sunday.

Virginia Tech's Ken Brown was named Thursday as one of 48 candidates for the Butkus Award, given annually to college football's top linebacker.

Brown, a senior from Richmond, led the Hokies in tackles last season with 113.

The Butkus list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on Oct. 20 and three finalists on Nov. 17. The winner will be announced Dec. 9.

Defensive backs Adrian Burnim, Gerry Toney and Mike Wardlaw each intercepted passes Thursday to highlight the University of Virginia's second preseason scrimmage.

Linebacker Curtis Hicks and defensive back Damon White each had seven tackles.

The offense scored five touchdowns during the scrimmage, three running and two passing.

Martin Huckabee, Radford's first gymnastics coach, will take over the men's and women's program this season.

Huckabee, who guided the Highlander women's team to a 95-49 record from 1978-1987, stepped down to devote his full attention to teaching health and physical education at the university.

Huckabee succeeds Paul Beckwith, who left Radford to become head women's gymnastics coach at Cornell.

NASCAR has fined driver Ronnie Thomas $100 and his sponsor Bob Melton $200 for "conduct detrimental to the sport" following an incident at New River Valley Speedway on Saturday night.

According to a release from the speedway, the incident occurred after the Late Model Stock Car race.

Thomas and Melton claimed that race winner Jeff Agnew started before the green flag was dropped for the race and "became abusive'' when talking to a NASCAR official about the matter, the release said.

Thomas and Melton were also placed on probation for the rest of the racing season.

Hilliary Scott, a former Roanoke College basketball standout, has signed a seven-month contract with a professional team from Dublin,Ireland.

Scott is a graduate of E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg and earned all-ODAC and All-South Region honors while at Roanoke.

In Clifton Forge, Northside's Brian Agee shot a 1-over-par 69 to take medalist honors and lead the Vikings to the team title Thursday in the first of six Blue Ridge District boys' golf tournaments.

After two trips around the par-34 nine-hole Cliftondale Country Club course, Rockbridge was second, 14 strokes back, followed by William Byrd, Lord Botetourt, host Alleghany and Salem.

Agee's closest competitors, at 71, were Northside teammates Brian Hill and Justin Young, and Matt Hepler of Alleghany. George Pickeral and Eric Reynolds of Rockbridge each shot 72.

The district circuit moves to Blue Hills on Tuesday.

Nick Varney shot a 1-under-par 70 to take medalist honors and lead Glenvar to a team victory in a Pioneer District golf match against Covington at Countryside. Glenvar had a total of 310; Covington shot 353.

Will Lovelace of George Wythe shot a 1-under-par 35 to take medalist honors and lead the Maroons to the team championship of a golf match at Draper Valley golf course. George Wythe had a team score of 155, Rural Retreat shot 208 and Fort Chiswell finished at 216.

The Roanoke Civic Center will be the battleground when World Championship Wrestling brings its Fall Brawl: War Games to Roanoke on Sept.18 at 6:30 p.m.
