The Rev. Keith D. Gunter has been appointed state overseer for Virginia for Churches of God based in Cleveland, Tenn. State offices are on Interstate 81 in the Hollins area of Roanoke County.
Gunter, whose appointment was made at a recent biennial assembly of the denomination, will begin his work next week. He is coming from a similar position in Louisiana.
Gunter will suceed the Rev. Orville Hagan who is leaving the Hollins office after two years to become national assistant director of evangelism and home missions based in Cleveland, Tenn.
Another new staff member also is coming to Roanoke. He is the Rev. Frank Meadows who will become evangelism and home missions director for Virginia. Meadows has been pastor of a Newport News church. He is exchanging jobs with the Rev. David Hagee who goes to Newport News. A third staff member is the Rev. Terrry Hart who continues as youth and education director.
On the national level, the Rev. Dr. Robert White was named general overseer. The 65th General Assembly was in San Antonio, Texas.
Theologian to speak
Stanley Hauerwas of Durham, N.C. is scheduled to speak Nov. 3 at 9:30 a.m. as part of Roanoke College's effort to bring contemporary theologians to the Roanoke Valley.
He is professor of theological ethics at the divinity school of Duke University and is the author of books and articles on religion today. The lecture at the college in Salem is sponsored by the Center for Church and Society, Office of Church Relations and the chaplaincy there.
Women's conference
Registration is open for a Baptist women's conference to be held Sept. 16 and 17 at Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond.
It will feature Carol Ann Draper and Bobbye Rankin who live in Nashville, Tenn. and Richmond respectively. Draper will speak on Bible insights for women. Rankin, long associated with the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, will discuss the current status of missions. Music will be by Alicia Williamson, Christian singer.

Special services
Special services are in progress today through Sunday at Fifteenth Tabernacle, an African-American Jewish congregation at 1401 Loudon Ave. N.W.
Joseph E. Palmer of Chicago is the speaker this morning at 9 and Sunday morning at 11.
Bedford Habitat
Bedford Habitat for Humanity is establishing its own organization apart from the Greater Lynchburg Habitat with which some city and county residents have been working.
It will be supported by churches and civic groups in both the city and county and will continue its organization on Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Saunders Grove Church of the Brethren. A site for Bedford's first Habitat house currently is being sought.
