HOW AREA BROKERS VIEW THE SLUMP

Peter Milward, manager of the Roanoke office of J.C. Bradford & Co.: There's no question about it - we all had a record year last year. This year is not quite as good as last, but we are still doing well. Last year it all came together, low interest rates and the stock market was decent. Most, if not all, brokers had a record year last year.|

William Nash, manager of the Roanoke office of Scott & Stringfellow Inc.: I don't know if this year is that bad. It is slower. 1993 was a record year for this office. It was a really good year. I don't think it's going to be as good this year. The market was down the first six months. When they're not making money, investors tend not to do anything, just stay put.|

Tyler Pugh, senior vice president and branch manager at Wheat First Butcher Singer: Nationally there's probably been a decline in the first six months of 25 percent, but that's not true regionally. It's certainly not true for us. We're a little below last year, but last year was a record in terms of gross revenue. It was for everyone in the industry.|

Robert Kulp, manager of the Roanoke office of A.G. Edwards & Sons: Good compared to what? This year is not as good as last year, but's it's sure not a bad year - and the year isn't over yet. I don't call it a bad year at all.
