TRAIN SEVERS MAN'S LEGS NEAR ELLISTON

An unidentified man had his legs severed when he was struck by a train near Elliston on Friday night.

Bob Auman, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern Corp., said the man apparently had his legs across the rails when he was hit by an eastbound maintenance train. Auman said the train consisted of two engines and 26 cars loaded with rail. It weighed about 2,300 tons.

Lt. Jeff Hodges of the Elliston Fire Department said the man, who appeared to be a teen-ager, was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was still being treated in the emergency room late Friday.
