STORM-RELATED CRASH CLAIMS LIFE

More than a week after it tore through Southwest Virginia, Tropical Storm Beryl took the life of a young Ferrum woman.

Christy Michele James, 18, died Saturday, 11 days after she was in a car accident. Ferrum Volunteer Fire Chief Roger Woods said he believed the heavy rain produced by Beryl was a factor in the crash.

On Aug. 17, James was driving toward Rocky Mount on Virginia 40 about 1 p.m. when her car hit a large pool of water and skidded over an embankment.
