In another consolation game, Drew Councill pitched a two-hit shutout and drove in the game's only run as Omaha, Neb., eliminated Russellville, Ark., 1-0.
In the first game, losing pitcher Ryan Gilleland - Timesland's baseball player of the year in 1993 at Jefferson Forest High School - walked Jack Marcellus to force Serverino home and eliminate Bedford. Earlier, three potential winning runs for Brooklawn were thrown out at the plate.
The 14-inning game tied the record for the longest in American Legion World Series history. Four earlier games had gone 14 innings, most recently in 1970.
In one of the quickest games in tournament history, Councill needed only 1 hour, 46 minutes to dispatch Russellville and improve his record to 19-0. His seventh-inning grounder scored pinch runner Mike Koltz from third base.
Koltz entered the game after first baseman Sean Munger singled to open the seventh. After advancing to second on a ground ball, Koltz moved to third on Russellville shortstop Leon Wheelus' error.
Losing pitcher Lance Franks (18-2) scattered six hits - three by Munger. He struck out 10 and gave up only the unearned run.
