BACK STARS FOR KEYDETS

Sophomore tailback Thomas Haskins rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries Saturday to lead the Red team past the White team 21-14 in VMI's final preseason football scrimmage in Lexington.

Haskins scored on runs of 94, 9 and 60 yards during the portion of the scrimmage played under game conditions. Freshman running back Jabbar Bean carried 11 times for 99 yards, including a 64-yard run.

Freshman quarterback Al Lester engineered the Red offense and completed 7 of 13 passes for 58 yards. Spike Johnson completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to split end Craig Lutterbie for the White team.

Defensively, free safety Kevin Reardon intercepted two passes for the Red team, and White team linebacker Jonathan Mayo stripped the ball from Lester and ran 47 yards for a touchdown.

nSalem's Chip Sullivan shot a 4-under-par 66 and is one stroke off the lead after the first round of the Virginia Beach Open golf tournament at the Honey Bee Golf Club.

Sullivan, the teaching pro at Hanging Rock in Salem, is behind a group of three golfers at 65 - defending champion Brian Sullivan of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and David Graham and Steve Widden, both of Virginia Beach.

Roanoke's Billy King is three shots off the pace after shooting a 69. David Tolley of Roanoke fired a 70 and Roanokers Mark Croy and Jeff Sprinkle shot 76 and 77, respectively.
