LAWHORN PUTS AN END TO DRY SPELL

CALLAWAY - Even though the yearly rainfall has been well above normal, it's been a long drought this summer for Dudley Lawhorn.

The drought ended Saturday night when Lawhorn won the 75-lap Late Model Stock Car feature race of the Ropho Sales & Service 300 at Franklin County Speedway.

It was the first race victory at the track for Lawhorn since April 16. Lawhorn, the track's 1993 points champion and current points leader, has consistently finished in the top five.

But the recent domination by Rodney Cundiff, Frankie Pennington and Bobby Radford has kept Lawhorn out of the winner's circle.

Lawhorn had a new motor in his Chevrolet on Saturday night, and the difference was obvious from the outset. He qualified on the pole, and when Cundiff wrecked his car on lap 23 and Pennington lost power on lap 46, Lawhorn had no serious challengers left.

``We broke our motor in tonight,'' Lawhorn said. ``Maybe we can keep it up next week.''

Rick Sigmon, in a rare FCS appearance this year, was second. Harvey Harrison, Joey Sigmon and Steve Lynch placed third through fifth, respectively.

In other races Saturday night:

nMini Stock pole-sitter Steve Lam lapped most of the 17-car field and coasted to his 20th victory of the season. Jimmy Cox, last week's winner, was second. Carlton Clark finished third.

nMike Elkins led from flag to flag in the Street Stock race, rolling to his third consecutive victory. Points leader Mike Dudley was second, and David Smith, in one of his best showings of the year, placed third.

nChad Hodges was the Rookie winner, overtaking early leader Stephanie Yates. Travis Sharpe finished second, and Mike Roberts was third, wresting the points lead from James Hunt.

nMike Owens won the caution-free race in the Pure Stock division. Points leader Red Hartman, who started at the rear of the 13-car field, rallied to finish second, and Kevin Ransom was third.

nTeddy Lawless won the 10-lap Truck race - his fifth victory in six tries. Tommy Hall and Anthony Bailey were second and third, respectively.

nBobby Gillespie won the 25-lap Any Car finale.
