The deal, reported in the works for days, was announced at a joint news conference with Viacom Inc., whose chairman, Sumner Redstone, said he had decided to unload the landmark sports area and its related properties as part of an effort to cut his company's debt.
The deal includes the 20,000-seat sports arena; The Paramount, the adjoining 5,600-seat theater; the professional basketball and hockey teams, and the MSG network, which broadcasts those teams' games, plus New York Yankees baseball, boxing and other events.
nThe two teen-agers charged with robbing and killing the father of former NBA superstar Michael Jordan could learn this week if their lives will be at stake when they go to trial.
Larry Martin Demery and Daniel Andre Green, both 19, will be in Robeson County Superior Court on Monday for a hearing before Judge Gregory Weeks. Both are accused of killing James Jordan while he napped in his car on a Lumberton roadside last July. Investigators allege the two then dumped Jordan's body in a South Carolina creek.
During the hearing, Weeks is expected to set rules governing how the media covers the case and set tentative trial dates, among other things. Prosecutors are expected to disclose evidence to show why the suspects should face the death penalty. And the judge is expected to consider whether to join the cases for trial.
Defense lawyers also have filed motions seeking independent firearms analysis, the elder Jordan's financial records and an expert to examine dental X-rays used to identify Jordan.
A motion filed in July by one team of defense lawyers said the 57-year-old Jordan may have faked his death to avoid financial obligations.
