The temporary employment agency said 29 percent of the Virginia companies it surveyed plan to hire people, compared with 26 percent of those surveyed nationwide.
Of Roanoke companies polled, 27 percent said they planned to increase staff between October and December, 7 percent predicted work-force cuts and 66 percent expect no change, Manpower said.
In a separate report, the Virginia Employment Commission said new claims for unemployment benefits rose 2,065 in July to 27,961 claims, up 8 percent from June.
Jobless claims normally rise during July when plants, especially in the Shenandoah Valley and Southside regions, close for annual two-week vacations, the agency said. Nearly all of the companies resumed normal work schedules after the vacations, the VEC said.
