TAKE NOTE

The American Red Cross is seeking to alleviate shortages of blood throughout the nation, particularly of Type O. They have launched a six-state campaign during the eight days surrounding Labor Day.

As of Aug. 24, the national Red Cross blood inventory consisted of 39,192 units, nearly 27,000 units below the normal three-day supply. Supplies of O positive and O negative were at 23 percent and 24 percent below emergency level, respectively.

"The American people have responded time and again when the call of blood donors has gone out. It is these donors who save the lives of people who are faced with life-or-death medical emergencies or who require regular blood transfusions, such as people with sickle cell anemia, cancer and leukemia," said American Red Cross president, Elizabeth Dole.

The New River Valley area bloodmobile schedule for the campaign is as follows:

Today, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Central United Methodist Church, 8th and Wadsworth Streets, Radford.

Sept. 6-8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Virginia Tech Squires Student Center, Commonwealth Room, Blacksburg.

It only takes about an hour to give blood - the gift of life.
