BURNT CHIMNEY VOTES TO RAISE RATES, EXTEND LOCAL-CALLING AREA

Telephone customers on the Burnt Chimney exchange in Franklin County have voted for a local-calling plan that would eliminate toll charges on calls to the Roanoke Valley.

This summer, Burnt Chimney phone customers, who are served by Sprint Centel of Virginia, petitioned the State Corporation Commission for extended local service.

The state agency reported Monday that of 1,840 customers responding to a poll, nearly 80 percent indicated they would be willing to pay an additional $3.48 per month for single-party residential service that would include the Roanoke exchange in their local-calling area. That increase would raise monthly basic service in Burnt Chimney to $15.04.

After a cost analysis for the Roanoke exchange is completed, Roanoke customers will be given a chance to comment on the extended-calling plan.
