AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED TO SHORT-STORY WRITERS

Writers from Roanoke to Bristol, Tenn., have won awards in the 18th annual Sherwood Anderson Short Story Contest.

The awards will be presented Sept. 10, in a program starting at 4 p.m. at the Marion Holiday Inn. David Anderson, a leading scholar on writer Sherwood Anderson at Michigan State University, will be the guest speaker.

A dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $14 ($7 for children under eight years). Advance reservations are required and can be obtained by calling Don Francis at 496-7716 during business hours or 783-8230 evenings and weekends.

Writing winners were chosen in four categories. In the Adult category, Charlotte Morgan of Goshen was first; Toni Williams of Natural Bridge, second; Jack W. Gilbert, Richmond, third, and honorable mention to Sandra Lake Lassen, Fleetwood, N.C.; Barry A. Price, Fancy Gap; Carter Elliott, Christiansburg; Liz Jones, Roanoke, and Jeri Hanel Watts, Lexington.

High School: Whitney Untiedt, Marion, first; Joey Alan Scarberry, Galax, second; Elizabeth Austin, Christiansburg, third.

Middle School: Joshua A. Wysor, Troutdale, first; Sean Wysor, Troutdale, second, and Kelly Simpson, Covington, third.

Primary School: Philip J. Edwards, Bristol, Tenn., first; William Humsi, Marion, second; Brandon Olinger, Marion, third, and Leslie Hale, Catawba, honorable mention.
