PROSECUTOR GETS REPORT ON POLICE SHOOTING

Roanoke police have sent their report on the Sept.18 police shooting of Gary Wayne West of Floyd County to Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Don Caldwell.

Results of tests on substances in West's bloodstream the day of his death are not expected back from a state lab for more than a week. Caldwell, who got the report Thursday, does not expect to issue his findings on the shooting until he has seen the lab results.

West, 35, died of multiple gunshot wounds after a two-hour armed standoff with police on Williamson Road. Crowds watched in the predawn hours as West sat in a car, then stood in the middle of the street, holding a 20-gauge shotgun.

Police say officers fired on West after he pointed his gun at a police lieutenant. A medical examiner said West was shot nine times.

Police Chief M. David Hooper identified four officers as having fired weapons from positions that could have struck West. Officers A.P. Forbes, J.L. Goad, C.C. Perkins and P.H. White were placed on administrative leave with pay for three days, then were returned to their regular assignments.
