AKRON, Ohio - Workers at a pair of Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. plants in Orrville have some tough decisions to make about their jobs: Are they willing to accept less pay and reduced benefits in exchange for the chance to keep working? Can they afford not to?
The stamping and cab assembly workers will vote Sunday on a severance package from Volvo GM and on a contract proposal from EWI Inc., a metal stamping maker that wants to buy the two plants. Neither action is expected to affect Volvo GM's truck assembly operations in Dublin, Va.
Under EWI, about 250 of the former Volvo GM workers can expect to earn about $3 less an hour. EWI offers profit-sharing and a 401K plan, but no pension. And there will be no raises for the first three years.
The Greensboro, N.C.-based heavy truck manufacturer had said it would close the two plants, affecting about 500 people, if it couldn't sell the facilities.

Philip Morris seeks food-service sale
NEW YORK - Philip Morris Companies Inc., maker of Marlboro cigarettes, Miller beer and Maxwell House coffee, said Friday it is in negotiations with a potential buyer it did not identify for its Kraft Foodservice business. The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Philip Morris was negotiating to sell the business for an expected $600 million to $800 million.
The food-service business distributes packets of ketchup, sugar and other condiments to restaurants and industrial-sized packages of cheese, mayonnaise, salad dressings and other products to hospitals and cafeterias.
