GRAHAM LEADS BRISTOL SENIORS GOLF

Marty Graham, brother of 1975 U.S. Open champion Lou Graham, fired an even-par 72 Friday to take a one-shot lead into today's final round of the Virginian Senior Golf Classic being played at the Virginian Club in Bristol.

Graham, 58, of Hermitage, Tenn., has a 36-hole total of 1-over 145. Chuck Smith, ranked as the U.S.'s No.1 senior amateur player by Golf Digest, is tied for second at146 with Oklahoman Sandy Singleton.

Robert Davis of East Lansing, Mich., is fourth at 147, after shooting his age - 68 - Friday.

Ned Baber of Roanoke followed his first-round 76 with a 75 Friday and is tied for 12th in the elite national field.

Wolftown's Jim Kite, beaten in the semifinals of the U.S. Senior Amateur last week, is tied for 15th at 152. Roanoker Arman Fletcher shot 74 Friday and is tied for 20th at 154.

In Radford, Ian Spooner, Che Henderson and Eric Ruano each scored two goals to lead the Radford men's soccer team to an 8-1 homecoming victory over Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.). The Highlanders (5-3-2) led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Spooner and Henderson, then erupted for six goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half.

Spooner is among the top 10 scorers in the nation with 10 goals this season. The Highlanders outshot Lincoln Memorial 35-5. The Railsplitters (2-7) avoided a shutout when John Payette scored at the 69:36 mark.

In Columbus, Ohio, Kris Fosdick scored two goals as Indiana defeated the Virginia Tech women's soccer team 2-1 in the first round of the Ohio State Soccer Classic. Courtney Sims had the lone goal for the Hokies (7-3). Michele Olsavsky assisted. Tech will face Minnesota on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the second round of the tournament.

Lord Botetourt's Robert Pauley ran the 3-mile course at North Cross in 14 minutes, 25 seconds to set a course record and lead the Cavaliers to a high school cross country victory. Mike Pauley, Robert's twin brother, was second in 15:21. Lord Botetourt won the meet with a total of 22 points, followed by North Cross at 53 and Virginia Episcopal at 57. The Cavaliers also won the girls' competition, 20-38 over North Cross.

At Waynesboro, Roanoke Valley Christian jumped out to a 4-1 halftime lead and never looked back as they crushed Fishburne Military 9-1 Friday afternoon. Jason Huddle scored first for the Eagles on a one on one play early in the game. Seven seconds later Mark Delong got in on the action when he punched one in for the Eagles (5-2). Richard Booth scored five times, Ben Thomas once, and even goalie Tom Anglin scored once to go along with his seven saves. Roanoke Christian outshot Fishburne (3-3) 25-8 in the Virginia Independant Conference game.
