CHARGERS SURVIVE SCARE BY COUGARS

COVINGTON - A fumbled pitch on a two-point conversion prevented Covington from knocking Bath County from the ranks of the unbeaten as the Chargers prevailed 13-12 in a tight Pioneer District high school football contest Friday night.

Trailing 13-6 in the fourth quarter, the Cougars (1-4, 0-1) drove 71 yards for a touchdown. Covington junior tailback Tom Luckett ran the ball in from the 2.

On the conversion attempt, quarterback Mike Barber and Luckett missed their connection on a pitchout, effectively ending the Cougars' chances.

Bath (4-0, 2-0) had taken the lead with two long second quarter touchdown runs, a 44-yarder by Ben Essex and a 45-yard run by Ivan Franklin . Franklin led the Chargers with 111 yards on 15 carries.

Covington started the scoring in the first quarter on Barber's 36-yard scoring run. Luckett led Covington with 111 yards on 20 carries.

Fieldale-Collinsville 14

STUART - Christian Batcheller's only completion of the night was a big one, as the Cougars' quarterback hit Wes Jones with a 12-yard touchdown pass with 6 minutes to play to lift Patrick County (3-1, 2-1) to a Piedmont District win.

Patrick County's Andy Stanley rushed for 176 yards and scored two touchdowns on runs of 4 and 1 yards.

Mancino Craighead rushed for two touchdowns for Fieldale-Collinsville (2-2, 1-2).

Magna Vista 7

Dan River 6

RIDGEWAY - Derik Hairston scored on a 4-yard run with 8:13 remaining in the third quarter and Andy Tunnell tacked on the point-after kick to give the Warriors a Piedmont District victory.

Dan River (3-1, 2-1) turned the ball over three times in the fourth quarter. Magna Vista cornerback Jeff Busby intercepted a pass early in the quarter, then recovered a fumble after safety Jermaine Simmons stripped the ball from Wildcat receiver Brian King on the Magna Vista 25-yard line.

The Warriors (1-3, 1-2) were forced to punt on their ensuing possession, but Dan River fumbled and Magna Vista's Craig Tatum recovered.

Laurel Park 10

MARTINSVILLE - Darrell Wilson tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cory Wilson with 2 1/2 minutes left in the game to lift the Lancers to a Piedmont District win.

Neither team scored until the fourth quarter when Laurel Park (2-2, 2-1) took the lead on a 25-yard Josh Crabtree field goal. Charles Mann returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards to put Bassett ahead 8-3.

The Bengals (2-2, 1-2) got past midfield in the closing moments, but Chuck Craddock intercepted a pass in the end zone to preserve the win for the Lancers. Solomon Paddyfote carried 19 times for 89 yards for Laurel Park.

Radford 42

Fort Chiswell 7

RADFORD - Larnell Lewis scored two touchdowns and gained 80 yards on eight carries to lead the Bobcats (4-1) over the Pioneers (1-4) in a non-district game.

Clancy Woodrum and Eddie Waldron also scored once each for Radford.

Ernest Viars scored Fort Chiswell's lone touchdown on a two yard run in the fourth.

Narrows 28

Grayson County 22

NARROWS - Brandon Hollie gained a season-high 174 yards on three carries and Gary Lowery ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Green Wave to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Lowery had touchdown runs of 70 and 35 yards in the first quarter for Narrows (2-2, 1-0) and Hollie added an 80-yard run for a score. Lowery also starred at defensive tackle with 12 tackles, five of them solos.

The teams combined for 666 rushing yards, 330 by Narrows.

Grayson County (1-4, 0-2) drove to Narrows' 34-yard-line late in the fourth quarter, but was stopped on downs.

Salem 42

Alleghany 0

The Spartans got their first win of the season by taking advantage of the Mountaineers' breakdowns in the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams.

Alleghany (2-3, 0-1) lost three fumbles, had an interception returned for a touchdown, had two punts blocked and had another punt returned for a touchdown.

Salem's Mike Murphy rushed for 107 yards, ran for touchdowns of 2 and 18 yards and returned a punt 79 yards for the Spartans' first score.

Salem (1-3, 1-0) allowed the visiting team just 56 yards of total offense. Spartan quarterback Seth Moore passed for 73 yards.

Martinsville 36

Tunstall 0

MARTINSVILLE - Manti Venable gained 137 yards on 14 carries as the Bulldogs (3-1, 3-0) shut out the Trojans (2-2, 1-2) in a Piedmont District game.

Fredrico Harriston started the rout with 3:46 left in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run, completing a 92-yard drive.

Martinsville went on another long drive in the second quarter, marching 99 yards for the score. Jesse Wade found David Walker open for a 32-yard touchdown pass just before halftime.

Bryan Roberts scored on an 11-yard run and Venable ran in from the 13 for a touchdowns in the third. Kevin Belcher picked off a Tunstall pass with 45 seconds left in the third and returned it 44 yards to make the score 32-0.

Rockbridge County 33

Lord Botetourt 6

DALEVILLE - Senior running back Gary Tyree rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Wildcats to their first Blue Ridge District victory of the season.

Rockbridge County (2-3, 1-1) led 14-0 at the half before blowing the game open in the third quarter on touchdown runs of 1 and 47 yards by Tyree.

It was 33-0 before the Cavaliers (1-3, 0-1) got on the scoreboard with approximately seven minutes remaining on a 46-yard run by Wesley Cox, who finished with 131 yards on 21 carries.

Rural Retreat 27

Castlewood 12

CASTLEWOOD - Kenny Lethco rushed for 126 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Indians to a Hogoheegee victory.

Ronnie Six ran for 109 yards on eight carries and scored Rural Retreat's first touchdown on a 75-yard run. Lethco scored on runs of 16 and 46 yards. Troy Pollard added a 6-yard touchdown run for Rural Retreat (3-2, 2-1).

David Owens scored two touchdowns for Castlewood (0-5, 0-4).
