The Buffaloes scored on consecutive plays from scrimmage en route to scoring 22 points in the second quarter to overcome its own sloppy play and defeat Shawsville 28-10 in a Three Rivers District game.
The victory raised Floyd's record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in district play, and keeps the Buffaloes moving toward what they hope will be a spot in the state playoffs. Shawsville dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the district.
Trailing 3-0 with 10 minutes, 40 seconds left in the second quarter, the Floyd County onslaught began when Peter Bucklin rumbled through the right side of the offensive line untouched for a 52-yard touchdown run. The point-after attempt failed but a Shawnee penalty granted the Buffaloes a reprieve. Given a second chance, Floyd went for two and the move payed off when Jamie Walters ran into the end zone to make the score 8-3.
The Floyd defense then stuffed Shawsville on three plays forcing a punt. On the first play from scrimmage, after taking over at its own 36, Walters galloped 64 yards to give his team a 14-3 advantage.
``We made a lot mistakes,'' said Floyd coach Winfred Beale. ``It seemed like every time we made a good play we had a penalty. But we feel like we have two good backs [Bucklin and Jamie Warren], and our line controlled the ball when we had it.''
On its next possession the Buffaloes almost made it three scores in four plays when Warren ran 32 yards for an apparent touchdown, only to have it called back due to penalty. After having the penalty assessed and losing 3 yards in three plays, Floyd faced fourth and 18. Beale elected to go for the first down and got it when quarterback Dwayne Hale completed a 20-yard pass to Warren for a first down at the Shawsville 20.
After being stymied on three more attempts to gain a first down, Floyd again faced a fourth-down situation. This time needing 7 yards to retain possession, Warren took the ball on his own 16-yard line and ran 13 yards for a first down at the Shawnees' 3.
On the next play Warren was rewarded for his effort when he ran for a 3-yard touchdown. Hale completed a pass to Ben Kiser for a two-point conversion that made it 22-3 at halftime.
Bucklin scored Floyd's only touchdown of the second half on a 48-yard run. He finished the game with 99 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, while Warren finished with two touchdowns and 98 yards on eight carries.
``I just kept my legs moving and broke two tackles [on the second touchdown run] and outran the safety,'' said Bucklin. ``We pretty much have to go undefeated to make the playoffs.''
The lone bright spot for the Shawnees was a 51-yard touchdown run by Chris Briggs in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
``We are still only playing half a ball game,'' said Shawsville coach Darrell Sutherland. ``We haven't put together two good halves of football yet.''
