ANDERS, Allen Lee, 16, of Street, Md., died Saturday, October 1, 1994. He was the son of Gladys Hash Anders of Fries,Va. and Gary Lee Anders of Street, Md. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 3, 1994, at 2:30 p.m. in Bethany United Methodist Church near Independence. Arrangements by Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence.

ATKINS, Fred, 72, of Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Floyd, passed away Friday, September 30, 1994, in a Greensboro hospital. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sisters, Virgie Cox, Greensboro, N.C., Lillian Atkins; two brothers, Damon Atkins, Salem, Monday Atkins, Fredericksburg; several nieces and nephews including Betty Kearns with whom he lived. Graveside services will be 12 noon Monday at the Cannaday Cemetery, Floyd, with the Rev. Richard W. Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd.

CAMPBELL, Frederick McKay, ``Rick'', 52, of Troutville, went to be with the Lord, Friday, September 30, 1994. Survivors include his wife, Suella Sprinkle Campbell; daughters, Carmen Campbell Drake, Great Falls, Jerri Campbell Weaver, Roanoke Co., Kimberly Lynn Campbell, Troutville; brothers, Gene H. Campbell, Grand Island, Neb., Calvin R. Campbell, Buchanan, Robert W. Hatter, Vinton, Bill H. Hatter, Jacksonville, N.C.; grandchildren, Richard McKay Drake, Jesse Lynn Drake, and Jarod Lewis Weaver. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 3, 1994 at 11 a.m. in Rader Troutville Chapel with Pastor Wilmar Wegner of Brookhill Baptist Church officiating. CHEWNING, James E., 78, of Roanoke County, died Friday, September 30, 1994. Surviving is his wife, Terese H. Chewning; his children, Loretta Lee Stahl, Huntsville, Ala., James E. Chewning, Jr., Roanoke, Katherine Todd Chewning, Cleveland, Ohio, Charles Douglas Chewning, Ft Campbell, Ky.; five grandchildren. Memorial services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 3 p.m. Monday, October 3, 1994. The Rev. Charles Ward will officiate. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday. It is suggested that memorials be made to the Clearbrook Rescue Squad.

CHILDRESS, Christine Hale, 61, of Salem, died Saturday, October 1, 1994, in a local hospital. She was born in Bluefield, W.Va. and had been a Salem resident for many years. She had been employed with the Salem Times Register and was a member of the Roanoke Moose Lodge #284 and the Vinton Moose Lodge. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Shelton Childress. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Georgie Carbaugh, Bluefield, Va., Jerry and Beverly Carbaugh, Florida, Jeffery S. Childress, Christiansburg, James S. Childress, Florida; two daughters, Melissa Gwen Childress, and her fiance, Robert Miles, Salem, Libby Wagner, Roanoke; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; cousin, Judy Harmond, Bluefield, W.Va.; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Harliss Hylton, Buchanan. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 1994, in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends, Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at the John M. CLOWERS, Jesse Gladden Sr., 53, of Roanoke, died Friday, September 30, 1994. He was very active in little league youth sports. He served as a coach in baseball, football, and basketball. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was a manager with Bell-Atlantic with 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Emma Clowers. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Christley Clowers; daughters and son-in-law, Kristi and Charles Newman, Nikki Clowers; son, Jesse G. Clowers, Jr.; grandchildren, Tyler Newman and Zoe Newman; brother and sister-in-law, Grant and Ingrid Clowers; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margaret and Pete Christley; brothers-in-law and wives, Jerry and Kathy Christley, Mike and Linda Christley, Debbie and Keith Christley, Warren and Barbara Christley; 31 nieces and nephews. Fun eral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 3, 1994 at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, Cotton Hill Rd., with the Bishop Al Cooper officiating. DOYLE, Mary Fulton Sutherland, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, September 30, 1994, of cancer. She was the widow of Marshall M. Doyle and a charter member of the Williamson Road Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Mary Marshall Doyle Rastatter, of Alexandria; sister, Zella B. Sutherland, of Roanoke; a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday in West Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, Va. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's North Chapel.

FARRIS, Leon Wiley Sr., 64, of Salem, died Friday, September 30, 1994. Survivors include a son, Leon Wiley Farris, Jr. of Christiansburg; two brothers, William Howard Farris of Williamsburg, James Raymond Farris of Shawsville; two sisters, Frances McMackel, Betty Farris Carper, both of Salem; two grandsons, Wiley Lee Farris and Jordan Farris, both of Christiansburg; a granddaugher, Holley Marie Farris; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. Virgil McHorn officiating. Burial will follow in the Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday after 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

MCDOWELL, Bessie Lee Reed, of 1201 Greenbrier Road, Waynesboro, died Friday night, September 30, 1994, at the Home of Caroline Robinson, 222 Featherstone Road, Lyndhurst. She was born in Floyd County, a daughter of the late Elmer and Almeda Reed. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of Vinton Christian Church, Vinton. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence W. McDowell, a brother, Harvey Reed, and a sister, Clyde Hankins. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence S. McDowell; a son, Reed S. McDowell of Pocomoke, Md.; two daughters, Sue Markley of Covington, Judy Bartley of Afton; a brother, Willie Reed of Catawba; a sister, Dollie Garman of Catawba; three stepsisters, Agnes Sloane of Vinton, Effie Kelley of Salem, and Clara Dudley of Burnt Chimney; 11 grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Augusta Memorial Park by the Rev. Albert Connette. The fam ily will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McDow Funeral Home.

MEDLEY, James Arthur, (``DC Poor Boy""), 79, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 1994. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Before his illness, he was a CB radio enthusiast. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Medley. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Melissa Medley of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Mildred ( Medley) and M. Victor Prince of East Hartford, Conn.; brother, Benjamin Medley of Washington, D.C.; sister, Mary Lucinda Hurt of Wyandanch, N.Y.; a special cousin, Winslow (Boo) Medley of Roanoke; three grandchildren, other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be Monday, 11:00 a.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Alfred Prunty will officiate. STEPTOE, Veronica, (Ronnie), 24, of Media, Penn., passed away, Friday, September 30, 1994. She was preceded in death her father, Frederic E. Steptoe. Survivors include her daughter, Mercedes Steptoe; her mother, Velda Steptoe, of Media, Penn.; two aunts, Valarie (Jim) Kelso, Carolyn (Richard) Riles; one uncle, Michael Steptoe, of Richmond, Va.; grandparents, Mary A. UNDERWOOD, Bertha Ellen, 87, of Roanoke, died Friday, September 30, 1994, in a local hospital. Mrs. Underwood was a member of Midway Christian Church. She was retired from American Viscose. She was the widow of Wilton Underwood and is survived by nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews including Annette K. and Samuel R. Simmons, Roanoke, Sharon and Don Poff, Salem, Kathy and Dale Martin, Roanoke, David Kanode, Salem, Brad and Beth Poff; and special friends, Lo Ayers, Jean Palmer, Faye Lyle and Sharon Vaught, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Vinton Chapel noon Monday, October 3, 1994, with the Rev. Holly O. Phillips officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. WANZER, Mary, of 1013 Madison Street, Bedford, died Friday moring September 30, 1994, at her residence. Born May 5, 1910 in Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Lizzie Mills and the widow of Llewellyn Wanzer. Survivors include a daughter, Christine Day, Bedford; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; also one sister, Mrs. Lottie Tinsley, Bedford; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Georgia Mills, Bedford, Mrs. Frances Beales, Washington, D.C., Mrs. Elizabeth Butler, San Pedro, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 3, 1994 at 2 p.m. at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Fairmont Cemetery in Bedford. Arrangements by Bedford Funeral Home.

WEISS, Robert D., 79, of Pembroke, died Thursday evening in the VA Medical Center in Salem. Born in Giles County on June 7, 1915, he was a son of the late Frank and Maude Hinchee Weiss and step-son of the late Arthur Link. He was father of the late Walter Lee Weiss and was a Veteran of the U. S. Army WW II and recipient of The Purple Heart Medal, and was retired from the Hoechst-Celanese Celco Plant at Narrows. Surviving are his wife Jane Selleck Weiss; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Freda Doan Weiss of Orlando, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted Monday October 3, 1994 at 2:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn, Pastor of Riverview Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Birchen Burial Park in Perspiring, VA. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral home in Pembroke. Sunday evening from 6 to 9 PM.
