ATKINS, Fred, 72, of Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Floyd, passed away Friday, September 30, 1994, in a Greensboro hospital. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sisters, Virgie Cox, Greensboro, N.C., Lillian Atkins; two brothers, Damon Atkins, Salem, Monday Atkins, Fredericksburg; several nieces and nephews including Betty Kearns with whom he lived. CHILDRESS, Christine Hale, 61, of Salem, died Saturday, October 1, 1994, in a local hospital. She was born in Bluefield, W.Va. and had been a Salem resident for many years. She had been employed with the Salem Times Register and was a member of the Roanoke Moose Lodge #284 and the Vinton Moose Lodge. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Shelton Childress. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Georgie Carbaugh, Bluefield, Va., Jerry and Beverly Carbaugh, Florida, Jeffery S. Childress, Christiansburg, James S. Childress, Florida; two daughters, Melissa Gwen Childress, and her fiance, Robert Miles, Salem, Libby Wagner, Roanoke; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; cousin, Judy Harmond, Bluefield, W.Va.; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Harliss Hylton, Buchanan. CLOWERS, Jesse Gladden Sr., 53, of Roanoke, died Friday, September 30, 1994. He was very active in little league youth sports. He served as a coach in baseball, football, and basketball. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was a manager with Bell-Atlantic with 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Emma Clowers. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Christley Clowers; daughters and son-in-law, Kristi and Charles Newman, Nikki Clowers; son, Jesse G. Clowers, Jr.; grandchildren, Tyler Newman and Zoe Newman; brother and sister-in-law, Grant and Ingrid Clowers; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margaret and Pete Christley; brothers-in-law and wives, Jerry and Kathy Christley, Mike and Linda Christley, Debbie and Keith Christley, Warren and Barbara Christley; 31 nieces and nephews. DOYLE, Mary Fulton Sutherland, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, September 30, 1994, of cancer. She was the widow of Marshall M. Doyle and a charter member of the Williamson Road Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Mary Marshall Doyle Rastatter, of Alexandria; sister, Zella B. Sutherland, of Roanoke; a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday in West Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, Va. MCDOWELL, Bessie Lee Reed, of 1201 Greenbrier Road, Waynesboro, died Friday night, September 30, 1994, at the Home of Caroline Robinson, 222 Featherstone Road, Lyndhurst. She was born in Floyd County, a daughter of the late Elmer and Almeda Reed. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of Vinton Christian Church, Vinton. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence W. McDowell, a brother, Harvey Reed, and a sister, Clyde Hankins. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence S. McDowell; a son, Reed S. McDowell of Pocomoke, Md.; two daughters, Sue Markley of Covington, Judy Bartley of Afton; a brother, Willie Reed of Catawba; a sister, Dollie Garman of Catawba; three stepsisters, Agnes Sloane of Vinton, Effie Kelley of Salem, and Clara Dudley of Burnt Chimney; 11 grandchildren. MEDLEY, James Arthur, (``DC Poor Boy""), 79, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 1994. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Before his illness, he was a CB radio enthusiast. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Medley. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Melissa Medley of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Mildred ( Medley) and M. WEISS, Robert D., 79, of Pembroke, died Thursday evening in the VA Medical Center in Salem. Born in Giles County on June 7, 1915, he was a son of the late Frank and Maude Hinchee Weiss and step-son of the late Arthur Link. He was father of the late Walter Lee Weiss and was a Veteran of the U. S. Army WW II and recipient of The Purple Heart Medal, and was retired from the Hoechst-Celanese Celco Plant at Narrows. Surviving are his wife Jane Selleck Weiss; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Freda Doan Weiss of Orlando, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted Monday October 3, 1994 at 2:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn, Pastor of Riverview Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Birchen Burial Park in Perspiring, VA. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral home in Pembroke. Sunday evening from 6 to 9 PM.
