Companies that wouldn't let cookie-peddling Girl Scouts in the door welcome the United Way with open arms. Many of these outfits go a big step further, allowing employees to contribute through payroll deductions., The

latter aspect gives United Way a special niche among fund raisers. "It's an earned privilege," said Robert A. Kulinski president and chief of the paid staff at United Way of Roanoke Valley.
