JUMP FROM MOTORCYCLE KILLS WOMAN

A Tennessee woman was killed Sunday morning on Interstate 81 in Smyth County when she tried to jump from a motorcycle on which she was a passenger.

Hazel Marie Barnett, 39, of Elizabethton, Tenn., was riding behind her husband, Charles Barnett, according to a report filed by state Trooper R.R. Cox. The couple was headed north on I-81 around 11:54 a.m. when the motorcycle struck uneven pavement in a construction area near Marion, the report said.

The motorcycle began to wobble, and Barnett tried to jump from the seat, the report said. She caught her leg on the motorcycle, hit the pavement and then the guard rail. She died at the scene.

Charles Barnett was taken to Smyth County Community Hospital, but the report did not say if he was admitted or list the extent of his injuries.

No charges were filed.
