Wood opened the scoring at 11:45 when he deflected a crossing pass from Nate Friends past Campbell to give UVa (8-2 overall, 3-1 ACC) a 1-0 lead. That assist marked the 12th consecutive game in which Friends tallied at least one point, setting a school record.
The Wolfpack (6-4, 2-1) tied the score on Jason Riegler's shot at 69.40.
In other soccer action:
David Moxom's direct kick goal at the 109:35 mark lifted visiting Robert Morris to a non-conference 2-1 overtime win over Radford.
The match was scoreless until the second half when Radford's Ian Spooner knocked in a pass from teammate Gerald Lakatos at the 49:31 mark to spot the Highlanders (5-4-2) a 1-0 lead. The Colonials (8-2-1) answered just seconds later when Musa Shannon tied the score on a cross from Brian Davis at 50:13.
Radford's women's team tied Louisville 2-2 in a non-conference match.
Karen Garland scored two goals early in the first half for Louisville (3-6-2).
The Highlanders (3-7-1) answered late in the first half when Melissa Gaitka scored a goal off a penalty kick. Gaitka's sister, Nadine, scored the tying goal off an indirect kick at the 57 minute mark.
Michael Dewers and Tony Kuhn each scored two goals as Vanderbilt defeated Virginia Tech 6-0 in the second round of the Vanderbilt Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The Hokies are 4-6.
Jennifer Walek scored two goals at the Minnesota women's team defeated Virginia Tech 4-1 in the second round of the Ohio State Soccer Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Michele Olsavsky scored the Hokies' lone goal. Tech is 7-4.
The Roanoke College women's soccer team was out shot 22-5 by Methodist College of North Carolina in a 2-0 loss at Salem. Ruth Reegan and Tammy Murphy scored second-half goals for Methodist (2-2). Roanoke is 5-2-1.
ETC. Dalton wins Enduro race at NRVS
Gary Dalton of Big Stone Gap led the last 48 laps on his way to winning the 100-lap Enduro race at New River Valley Speedway. Just 15 of the 38 cars that started the race were still running at its conclusion.
Gene Duncan of Radford won the race and track points title in the Mini Stock division.
Tommy Allie of Christiansburg took the lead on a restart six laps from the end and went on to win the 50-lap Pure Stock race. However, the results were not official, pending an inspection of the heads of the top finishers in both Saturday's and Sunday's races.
Steve McCoy, the apparent second place finisher in each race, was disqualified for illegal pistons. That moved Cundiff to second and Sam Sayers to third in Saturday's race won by Aaron Deplazes.
Marilyn Baker of Washington and Lee defeated teammate Natalia Garcia 6-0, 6-0 as the Generals swept the women's singles and doubles tennis competetion at the Rolex Southwest Regionals in Lexington. Baker and Garcia defeated Beth Todd and Kirsten Erickson 6-2, 6-3 to win the doubles title. The teammates will compete in the Rolex National Tournament at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla., Oct.28-30.
Virginia Tech Golf Club head professional Jay Hardwick fired a tournament-record 6-under 64 to capture the Fincastle Pro-Pro tournament at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield. Hardwick, whose 63 a few years back still holds as the course's competitive record, had eight 3's on his scorecard, including two eagles. Billy King of Blue Hills was second at 70, while Tim Holbrook of Hidden Valley CC was third at 71. Hardwick combined with Roanoke pro Wayne Holley to shoot 68 to tie King and Water's Edge's John Snyder for team honors. Hardwick and Holley collaborated with Gene Forbes and Don Taylor to shoot 60 and take the four-man competition.
