ARTHUR, Fannie Elizabeth, 82, of Salem, formerly of Waiteville, W.Va., died Sunday, October 2, 1994 in the Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was born November 19, 1911, in Gold Bond, a daughter of the late Louie and Viola Stebar. She was a retired nurse's aide at the Andrew S. Rowan Memorial Home, a life long member of the Laurel Branch Methodist Church, and a life long resident of Waiteville for 73 years before moving to Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell C. Arthur on June 6 , 1970. Surviving are two sons, Kermit C. Arthur, Salem, Henry C. Arthur, Waiteville, W.Va.; five daughters, Maxine Hall, Salem, Phyllis Crosier, Waiteville, W.Va., Shirley Bostic, New Castle, Loretta Black, Richmond, Kitty Sarver, Salem; one brother, Rhoda Bailey, Covington; one sister, Virgie Kessinger, Gold Bond; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the New Zion Union Church in Waiteville with Rev. Jim Morris officiating. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery in Waiteville. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home in Union, W.Va. and the family will also be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Crosier in Waiteville, W.Va. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service. Pallbearers are Richard, Randy and Billy Arthur, Jeff Crosier, David Sarver, Junior Bostic, Barry Eppling, Allen Myers.

AUSTIN, Gertrude Haire, 68, of Vesuvius, Va., died Monday, October 3, 1994, at her home. Mrs. Austin was born July 1, 1926, in Bainbridge, Ga., a daughter of the late Barney M. Haire and Betty Cook Haire. She was a member of the Vesuvius Baptist Church and the widow of Edgar W. Austin. Surviving are her son, Donald Gray Austin, Vesuvius; two brothers, Henry Haire, Edward Haire, both of Bainbridge, Ga.; three sisters, Christine Powell and Mildred Haire, both of Bainbridge, Ga., Betty Jo Groah, Staunton. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 1994, at the graveside in the Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Dan Stanley. BARBER, Nellie Croy, 89, of Pearisburg, died Sunday night, October 2, 1994, at her home. Mrs. Barber was born June 3, 1905 in Pearisburg, Va. and was a daughter of the late Richard Hugh and Margaret Elizabeth Munsey Croy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse William Barber. Mrs. Barber was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg and was a retired clerk of the Giles Treasurer's office. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Kate and Clarence Taylor, Pearisburg; one sister-in-law, Mrs. James R. (Ross) Croy, Pearisburg; seven nieces and nephews; and nine great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 5, 1994 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg at 2 p.m. , with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Va. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening form 7 to 8 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home. BROWN, Ruth Dreyer, 95, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 29, 1994. She was the widow of Arthur Watts Brown. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

BUTT, Irene Stowers, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, September 27, 1994, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Howard D. Butt; a sister, Mae Stowers Smith, Salem; a devoted sister-in-law, Goldia Caldwell Stowers, Blacksburg and sisters-in-law, Emma Sue Stowers, Newport, Mrs. Frank Israel, Brevard, N.C., and Helen Siemer, Ft. Myers, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 30, at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel.

CASSIDY, Patrick Wayne, 49, of 903 Wildwood Drive, Bedford, died Monday, October 3,1994, at his home. He was born August 22, 1945 in Bedford, son of the late Levi Jack Cassidy and Lillie Jennings Pentecost Cassidy. He was an employee of B & W Nuclear Technologies, a Communicant of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, a longtime member of the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department, where he was currently serving as Captain, and had served in the National Guard. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Craig Cassidy; two daughters, Michell R. Cassidy and Melynda D. Cassidy, both of Bedford; a brother, J. Michael Cassidy, Richmond; a sister, Ina Wray McDaniel, Bedford; and his grandson, Anthony Wayne Puckett. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with Father James J. Begley and the Rev. Travis Witt officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. CLARK, Anna Caroline, infant daughter of Lee and Sandra Clark of Roanoke, died Monday, October 3, 1994. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Curtis and Anita Clark, Stuart, Sherman and Betty Joe Thomas, Stuart; great-grandparents, Claude and Lena Clark, Stuart, Roy and Evelyn Turner, Bassett, Edgar and Edna Roberson, Stuart, Mary Thomas, Bassett; uncles and aunts, Jeff Clark and fiancee, Kate Wright, Richmond, Lisa and Jamie Luther, Fieldale. Also surviving are many other supportive friends and family. CULBRETH, Pamela Garner, 31, of Roanoke, died Sunday, October 2, 1994. A native of Vienna, Va., she graduated from St. Ann's-Belfield School in Charlottesville, and attended Greensboro College. She is survived by a son, Zachary Robert Culbreth, Roanoke; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Garner, Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dale Garner, Altamonte Springs, Fla; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lowry Williams, Oxford, N.C.; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Rut h Garner, Raleigh, N.C.; aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Don Park, Greensboro, N.C., and Mr. and Mrs. James Wilkerson, Oxford, N.C.; and numerous cousins and other relatives. FRANTZ, Elizabeth Spencer, (``Dolly""), 87, of Salem, died at her home, Monday, October 3, 1994. She was an active member of the Salem Presbyterian Church, a director of the Needlework Guild of America, and for many years, a member of the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley. She was the daughter of the late E. B. Spencer, who was the first president of the First National Exchange Bank and a past president of the Roanoke Rotary Club. She is survived by her son and dau ghter-in-law, Lanier and Thecla S. Frantz and grandchildren, Sloane and Cole Frantz; her son and daughter-in-law, J. Spencer and Joy D. Frantz and grandchildren, James S. Jr. and Janet D. Frantz, Robert R. Frantz; her son and daughter-in-law, J. Bouldin and Clarice C. Frantz and grandchildren, Carolyn F. and Jay Gephart, Thomas L. Frantz. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Salem Presbyterian Church, corner of Main and Market Streets, on Thursday, October 6, 1994, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dean Lindsey officiating. FRINGER, Nelly Ware, 91, of Roanoke, formerly of Springwood, died Sunday, October 2, 1994. She was a very active member of the Springwood Baptist Church and The Mineral Springs Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Charles S. Fink, of Buchanan; two daughters, Frances Gulde, of Ashville, N.C., Judy C. Reed, of Smyrna, Ga.; two sisters, Lena Faith, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Linnie Meridith, of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 5, 1994, 11 a.m. at The Rader Troutville Chapel with the Rev. Bobbie Harris and Rev. Chip Corbin officiating. HEGARTY, Anne P., 57, of Montvale, died Sunday, October 2, 1994 at a local hospital. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Rescue Squad, where she served as an Emergency Medical Technician. She was preceded in death by a son, Sean Hegarty. PALMER, Charles Edward, servant of the Lord, 73, of Riner, was called to his heavenly home Sunday, October 2, 1994. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 48 years, Anna Underwood Palmer; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Susie Palmer, Mark and Patti Palmer, Jerry and Elizabeth Palmer, all of Riner; five daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Henry Bibb, Phyllis Palmer, special daughter, Shirley Palmer, Charlotte and Jimmy Holt, all of Riner, Charlene and John Clark, Floyd; one sister, Zora Miles, Riner; one brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Linda Palmer, Christiansburg; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven brothers-in-law and wives; two siste rs-in-law and husbands; numerous nieces and nephews. He was a lifelong dairy farmer who always had a kind word for everyone he met. He will be sadly missed by all. PROEHL, Pauline McGeorge, 78, of Vinton, died Sunday, October 2, 1994. She was the widow of Ernest A. Proehl and a lifelong member of the Vinton Baptist Church. SHRADER, Joseph Johnson, 91, of Lugoff, S.C., died Saturday, October 1, 1994. Born in Bland County, Va., he was a son of the late Lockard A. and Effie D. French Shrader. He was a retired employee with the DuPont Company; a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church; and a member of the Lugoff Masonic Lodge #411. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Maxine Epling Shrader; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Linda) Rabon and Mrs. Lenny (Betty) Haston, both of Lugoff, S.C.; five sons, Joseph Shrader, Narrows, Va., Graydon Shrader, Newport, Va., Paul Shrader and Wayne Shrader, both of Lugoff, S.C., and Donald Shrader, Camden, S.C.; one brother, Frank Shrader, Narrows, Va.; three sisters, Frances Conley and Eula Hamilton, both of Narrows, Va., an d Virginia Ferrell, Rich Creek Va.; 25 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. STEGER, Mary Louise Scott, 73, of 135 14th Street, N.W., Pulaski, died Monday, October 3, 1994 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Williamson, W. Va. on December 7, 1920, the daughter of the late Alanson Burl Scott and Susan James Scott. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski. Mrs. Steger was a retired assistant vice president of Sovran Mortgage Co rporation. She was also past president of the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Watts Steger Jr. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, H. Watts and Linda D. Steger III, Buchanan, James Douglas and Sallie F. SULT, Elizabeth L., (``Betty''), 75, of Ro anoke, died Monday, October 3, 1994. Betty was born Elizabeth Thaila Carosiello on August 24, 1919 in Wellsville, Ohio. She attended Wellsville High School and graduated from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa. with a BA degree in Spanish and French. Later she received a Masters Degree at Radford University and did doctoral graduate studies at Virginia Tech. She was in public school education for forty-three years in Wythe County, Franklin County and at Southern Seminary College in Buena Vista. She was a licensed professional counselor by the Virginia Board of Behavorial Science and was a member and past president of the Roanoke Area chapter of the Virginia Personnel and Guidance Association and in 1984 she received the Humanitarian and Caring Person Award by that organization. She was a member of American University Women and Cave Spring United Methodist Church. Betty is predeceased by her parents, John and Katherine Carosiello; brothers, Victor and Ance of Wellsville; and husbands, A. Willard Lester and J. Earle Johnson of Wytheville. She is survived by her husband, Charles Leon Sult, formerly of Wytheville; a son, A. Willard Lester, of Wytheville; a sister, Roma Ciccarelli, Chester, W.Va.; and a brother, Telu Carosiello, Wellsville, Ohio and two stepsons, Charles W. Sult, Trenton, N.J. and Thomas W. Sult, Atlanta, Ga.; two stepgrandchildren, Akemi and Jay Eisenhardt, Wytheville. Funeral services will be held at Cave Spring United Methodist Church, 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. William C. WENDELL, Arn, 74, of Edison, N.J., died Saturday, September 10, 1994, at home after a short illness. He was a former long time clothing retailer. He is survived by his wife, Harriet R. Wendell, Edison, N.J.; two sons, Bart R. Wendell, Acton, Mass., Jeffery R. Wendell, Roanoke; a brother, Robert Wendell, Somerville, N.J.; a sister, Trudy Hendricks, Salem; three grandchildren. WHITE, Essie Mae, 75, of Hillsville, passed away October 1, 1994 at Rockledge, Fla. She was born June 19, 1919 in Floyd County. She is the daughter of the late Jerome E. Williams and Nettie Trussler Williams. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Nolan Surratt. She is survived by her husband, Mondes White; one daughter, Terry Craig of Rockledge, Fla.; two sons, Robert C. Nolan, Russellville, W. WORLEY, Gerald Dean, 58, of Buchanan, died Sunday, October 2, 1994. He was a member of the Buchanan Moose Lodge. He is survived by his son, Steven Worley; daughter, Cindy Worley, both of Charleston, S.C.; brother, William D. Worley, Buchanan; sisters, Joyce Ann Worley and Betty Miller, both of Natural Bridge; three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 5, 1994, at 2 p.m. in Rader Buchanan Chapel with the Rev. Chester L. Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Springwood Cemetery.
