The first offering will be a talent show, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in the school's Little Theatre. The class will try to involve members of the community in the show, which will be a fund-raiser for its major spring production.
Next will be a mime performance by the acting troupe at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Little Theatre.
A one-act play, "The Serpent," will be performed Feb. 9 and 10 before going on to regional and state competition. It is an experimental play first produced off-Broadway. The advanced theatre arts class will be responsible for this production.
The spring production will be the Broadway and movie musical "Little Shop of Horrors," inspired by a low-budget 1960 Roger Corman film that became a cult classic. Public performances will be May 12-14.
"Horrors" will be directed by Rhonda Welsh, the school's drama director. Angela Harris, the school's choral director, will conduct. Music and art teacher Debbie Martin will construct the puppet of the carnivorous plant, a major character in the play.
The production will involve nearly 80 students in acting, singing, dancing and technical support. Stage design and construction classes will be offered in the spring, and students will design and build the extensive set.
The school's theater program is ranked second in the state because of its showings in one-act play competition. For five straight years, it has advanced through preliminary competitions to the state level - a record for Virginia High School League AAA theater competition.
