TODAY'S TOPIC: APCO POWER LINE

What do the candidates think about the proposed Apco power line across Southwest Virginia?

- George O'Neill, New Castle

COLEMAN: "This is a complex economic and environmental issue for which I don't have an answer, since I haven't reviewed any detailed reports about the power line. Generally, I believe that the permitting process should fairly balance environmental protection with the economic benefits of a project, and that local citizens' views should be taken into account."

NORTH: "This is primarily a state and local issue which the U.S. Senate has no business meddling in. I hope an accommodation to protect property rights while meeting the needs for additional power in Southwest Virginia can be worked out."

ROBB: "The proposed Apco 765 kv power line has generated quite a bit of controversy and concern among the residents of Giles, Bland, Pulaski, Montgomery and Craig counties. That's understandable given the fact that many of these residents were not provided th echance to have their legitimate concerns heard. I will not be comfortable with this project until all of my constituents are given full access to the decision-making process and have had the opportunity to have their say."
