UVA GOLFER RALLIES FOR VICTORY

Simon Cooke of the University of Virginia fired a 10-under-par 206 to take medalist honors at the University of Tennessee Tournament of Champions in Knoxville, Tenn.

Cooke began Monday's play in third place, four strokes off the lead, and shot a 68 to finished ahead of John Dalzell of Tulsa, Boomer Erick of Tennessee and Josh McCumber of Florida on the par-72 Holston Hills Country Club course.

Virginia finished fifth in the 15-team field with a 1-under-par 863. Tulsa finished at 842 to claim the team title by five strokes over 11th-ranked Florida. Eighth-ranked Auburn finished third at 852, and host Tennessee place fourth, five strokes ahead of the Cavaliers.

Virginia's Lewis Chitengwa finished 35th at 220, and Jimmy Flippen and Cole Kelly tied at 49th at 221.

In other golf:

Mike Mead of Bluefield College shot a first-round 74 to take the lead in the Ferrum Invitational at Draper Valley Golf Course. Christopher Newport's Scott Scovill, the defending NCAA Division III champion, is second at 75. Christopher Newport leads the team standings at 312, and Hampden-Sydney is second at 319. Ferrum and Blufield College are third at 320.

Regular-season medalist Jason Orlando shot a 72 to lead regular-season champion Northside to victory in the Blue Ridge District golf tournament at the par-70 Hunting Hills Country Club. The Vikings finished at 298. Lord Botetourt was second at 317, followed by Rockbridge County at 328, William Byrd at 330, Salem at 336 and Alleghany at 360.

Northside and Lord Botetourt will advance to the Region 3 tournament Oct.17 at Falling River Country Club. The teams will be joined by Blue Ridge District regional qualifiers George Pickeral and Eric Reynolds of Rockbridge County and Kevin Divers and Scott Mahanes of William Byrd.

Chad Williams shot a 72 to help regular-season champion Cave Spring win the Roanoke Valley District golf tournament at Countryside (par-71). The Knights finished at 302. Regular-season medalist Mark Baldwin carded a 73 as Patrick Henry placed second at 313. Franklin County was third at 320, followed by Pulaski County at 335 and William Fleming at 407.

Cave Spring and Patrick Henry will advance to the Northwest Region tournament Oct.18 at Water's Edge at Smith Mountain Lake. The teams will be joined by Roanoke Valley District regional qualifiers Chad Foutz, Shannon Altice and Brandon Shively of Franklin County and Matt Gardner, Ryan Nunley and Chris Davis of Pulaski County.

Nick Varney beat out Highland County's Eric Hooke for medalist honors as Glenvar ran away with its fourth straight Pioneer District tournament title at the Homestead's par-72 Lower Cascades course.

Varney and Hooke were tied at 81 after 18 holes, but Varney prevailed in a playoff when he birdied the par-4 20th hole.

Glenvar won with a 332, and Highland County was second, 41 shot back. n to the Highlanders, who scored 332 was Highland County which finished 41 shots back, one shot better than third-place Covington and four shots better than Bath County. Parry McCluer and James River finished at 389 and 398 respectively.

Glenvar and Highland County will represent the Pioneer District at the Region C tournament Oct.18 at the Wytheville Country Club. Individual qualifiers are Aaron Duncan of James River, Charles Rowsey of Parry McCluer, Billy Keyes and Philip Neff of Bath County and Jeff Tucker and Shane Williams of Covington.

SOCCER Roanoke whips Bridgewater

Todd Hallauer had two goals and one assist, and Demmis Yanco had two assists as Roanoke defeated visiting Bridgewater 4-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic men's soccer match. Rich Aftorra and Andy Smith each scored for the Maroons (7-5 overall, 5-1 ODAC). Bridgewater is 0-8, 0-5.

Shannon Sayre, Mindy Mallory and Susan Sautter each scored as Ferrum defeated Randolph-Macon Woman's College 3-0 in a non-conference soccer match at Lynchburg. Megan Turner had two assists for the Panthers (5-5), and Carrier Early had one assist.
