CHRISTIANSBURG SUPPLY WINS OVER THE BEST IN THE NATION

Christiansburg Supply faced the best in the nation recently. And it emerged victorious.

The venue: the Masters Softball Association 40-and-over national tournament in Gastonia, N.C., on Sept. 10-11.

Christiansburg Supply accomplished its victory in the 32-team tournament in a most unlikely way. It lost to a team from South Carolina in the first round. Then it came back and won eight games in a row, beating teams from Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Christiansburg Supply twice beat a previously unbeaten squad from Charlotte, N.C., 19-10 and 17-7, to claim the title.

"We were just flat the first game and lost it," explained WALT HAYNES. "Then we came back through the losers' bracket and got on a roll. That's the way it goes sometimes."

Haynes and WES STARKEY were named co-MVPs of the tournament.

Joining the pair on the All-American Team were MARSHALL FOX, DANNY KING, RODNEY RADFORD and RAY HUNDLEY.

Others on the squad were HOSEA BLANKENSHIP, JOHN WAYNE MARTIN, STAN PARHAM, TOMMY COX, DENNIS HARMON, JOE DAVIDSON and TRACY HARISTON.

JOSH BLANKENSHIP and JARRED KING were bat boys.

CHARLIE ASHWORTH sponsored the team's trip to the tournament.

KICKING GAME: Top Gun and the Hornets are the top two youth teams in Pulaski so far this season.

Top Gun (4-0) leads the 10-and-under league. ELIZABETH HAGER has scored in each match for Top Gun and has seven for the season so far. TYLER ASHWORTH is second with five goals. Both had a hat trick - three goals scored - in an 8-3 over the Raiders.

JOHN HEDGE of the Wildcats leads the league in scoring with nine goals. He has scored four goals in a game twice already this season.

In the 13-and-under league, the Hornets (3-0) have shown balance, as six players have scored and four have seen action in goal. STEPHEN BRUBAKER has scored in each game and leads the league in scoring with three goals. JASON DEAN has played goal keeper in each game. Dean also has the only multigoal game for the Hornets, scoring twice in a 3-1 win over the Strikers.

SCHOOL DAYS: Pulaski Middle School fell to Cave Spring 8-6 in football. The loss dropped Pulaski Middle to 1-2.

KWASI SCOTT scored the Orioles' lone touchdown on a 49-yard run. A 20-yard punt return by BRANDON MILLER set up the score. Scott rushed 11 times for 76 yards.

BEN TILLER and DOMINIC BROWN each caught 15-yard passes from quarterback JABE LARGEN. Brown and Largen both picked off Cave Spring passes.
