The introductions came as council proclaimed October as Crime Prevention Month in Pulaski. In the proclamation, Mayor Andy Graham calls on citizens, businesses and institutions to increase their participation in local crime prevention efforts.
New Pulaski officers include Mickey Smith, a former Wythe County deputy sheriff; Marshall ``Marty'' Dowdy, a former deputy in Fauquier and Montgomery counties; former Wytheville police officer Robin King; and Todd Lytton, a former Pulaski dispatcher.
King is a graduate of Wytheville Community College. Lytton is a New River Community College graduate who started as a part-time dispatcher and moved up before being named as an officer. Sandy Wilhoit has been hired as a new part-time dispatcher.
Vanessa J. Hill was named crime prevention specialist, a job she has held previously through grant funding. Council formally created the position Tuesday as part of the department.
Also attending the council session were three department veterans in their new jobs as division commanders: Barry Buckner, support services; Ed Hogston, investigations; and Ernie Taylor, patrol. Cooley said their support and cooperation helped him bring the department up to strength.
He also introduced third-shift dispatcher Wanda Dalton, a night-shift worker hired in March before Cooley was named chief.
Cooley said another dispatcher, Curt Hendricks, will be added in the near future.
``I'm just proud as a peacock, to tell you the truth, at the caliber of the applicants I got and was able to hire,'' Cooley told council.
