Indoor tennis

BLACKSBURG - The New River Valley Tennis Association offers indoor tennis sessions at the Virginia Tech tennis pavilion for beginners and advanced players.

Signup for intermediate and advanced players is Saturday, Oct 8, 4:30 p.m., at the tennis pavilion. Play is 5-6:30 p.m. Saturdays. The cost for 24 weeks is $240.

Signup for beginners is Sunday, Oct. 9, 5 p.m., at the tennis pavilion. Play is 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sundays. The cost for 24 weeks is $190.

All slots are filled first come, first served.

Holiday closings

PULASKI - Because of the Columbus Day holiday, Pulaski County offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 10.

Big Help Day

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Extension Office is planning group service projects to be scheduled around Big Help Day on Oct. 15.

The local office will participate in the national 4-H Youth Development Program that is collaborating with the Nickelodeon cable television channel.

The service activities range from adopting local monuments to helping care for animals at the local shelter.

GED testing

DUBLIN - The New River Community College will offer two General Education Development testing sessions in addition to its regular schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 4-9 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

Participants must register between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. in trailer 13 of Parking Lot E of the Dublin campus. Applicants must be Virginia residents and at least 18 years-old. Valid picture identification is required for registration.

The test fee is $5.

Annual homes tour

BLACKSBURG - The Montgomery County Christmas Store will hold its annual homes tour on Oct. 15 and 16, 1-5 p.m.

Participants may travel to the six homes on the tour by car or bus. The complimentary busses will leave Roses in the University Mall, Blacksburg and Kmart, Christiansburg at 12:45 p.m. Space is available on a first come first serve basis.

The tour fee is $10 and will benefit the Christmas store.

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Resource and Referral Service will hold an open house at its new location at 404 Clay St. Thursday, Oct. 20, 6-8:30 p.m.

Child care providers may find information on the new program Beginning with Books that provides literacy information and loans story kits, books and toys.

New River committee

BLACKSBURG - The National Committee for the New River will hold an open meeting Tuesday Oct. 18, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Museum of Natural History on North Main Street.

The meeting includes a presentation of the that explores the area of the river downstream of Glen Lyn to the headwaters of Bluestone Lake and updates on the Save Our Streams program.

Performing at NRCC

DUBLIN - Local entertainer Christopher "Cat" White will perform in New River Community College's Student Lounge Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m.

White, who plays Appalachian music and tells stories, also educates local youth about Appalachian culture.
