Lieb, 79, was one of three living ``Smart Boys.'' He is survived by Johnny Wagner and Gene Studebaker from the team that played in the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Invitation Tournament (now known as the National Invitation Tournament) at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Paul Rice of Roanoke died last year, and Bob Sheffield died in 1986.
The 1938-39 Roanoke team played against many major college squads of the era and was invited to participate in the NIT, then considered to be the biggest postseason tournament. Roanoke lost to St.John's in the first round, completing a 21-3 season under Gordon ``Pop'' White.
Funeral arrangements for Lieb are pending.

Woodrow Mullin, Tazewell County's superintendent of schools, has asked Graham High School principal Charles Grindstaff to report to him on an incident between a Graham football player and Richlands High School assistant coach Dennis Vaught during Friday night's game.
``I have received some reports that there were inappropriate remarks made and I'm asking for a report,'' Mullin said. ``I'm not going to say anything beyond that.''
Vaught, a former head coach at Patrick Henry and Lexington, was the head coach at Richlands in 1992 when that school was found guilty of using illegal cleats in a state playoff victory over Salem. Vaught was suspended from coaching last year and returned as an assistant on this year's staff.
Richlands was unbeaten before losing to Graham 16-6 on Friday night.
The Roanoke Express unveiled a 35-man training camp roster that features nine former Express players and standout goalie Dave Gagnon, who has helped lead two teams to East Coast Hockey League championships. Among the contingent returning from last season's Express team are center Pat Ferschweiler, the team leader in assists; wing Jeff Jestadt, Roanoke's leader in goals; and defenseman Michael Smith, an ECHL All-Star.
The Express opens its exhibition schedule Wednesday, when the Johnstown Chiefs visit the Roanoke Civic Center. Roanoke opens the regular season Oct.18 with a home game against the Hampton Roads Admirals.
In Charlottesville, Virginia trailed by a goal twice before pulling away to beat Liberty 6-2 in men's soccer.
The Flames (2-7-1) led 1-0 on a goal by Jeff Johnson and 2-1 on an own goal by the Cavaliers (9-2). Virginia then took control with five consecutive goals, two of them by A.J. Wood.
In Charlotte, N.C., 14th-ranked North Carolina Charlotte scored two minutes into the game and rolled to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech in the Hokies' Metro Conference men's soccer opener. Mark Ludwig scored for Tech (4-7). UNCC improved its record to 8-2, 3-0.
In Radford, Ian Spooner was one of four Highlanders to score as Radford rolled past Marshall 4-0 in men's soccer. The goal was the 12th for Spooner, the nation's fourth leading scorer this week. Also scoring for Radford (6-4-2) were Ryan Scott, Tommy Young and Che Henderson. Marshall's record dropped to 3-7-1.
In Radford, Missy Gaitka scored her Big South Conference-leading 11th goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as Radford dropped a 3-1 decision to North Carolina Greensboro in women's soccer. The Highlanders' record is 3-8-1, 0-2; UNC Greensboro is 7-4-1, 4-0.
In Ferrum, Byron Spicer's second-half goal earned Ferrum a 3-3 tie with Averett (1-8-2, 0-2-1) in Dixie Conference men's soccer. Emerson Umana and Chris Evans also scored for the Panthers (3-7-1, 1-2-1).
In Ferrum, goalkeeper Daniella Giusto recorded her fifth shutout of the season as Ferrum blanked Averett 3-0 in Dixie Conference women's soccer. Giusto is Ferrum's career leader in shutouts with 15. Susan Sautter, Kristen Skrobatt and Cindy Rhinehart scored for the Panthers (6-5, 1-2). Averett's record dropped to 1-8 and 0-3.
In Lexington, Rich Daughdridge scored two goals and held on for a 2-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite in men's soccer.
Four players for VMI (2-6-1) and two for Eastern Mennonite (9-4) received yellow-card cautions in a physical game.
In Lexington, six Washington and Lee players scored goals and Bill Sigler had three assists to lead the Generals to a 6-1 rout of Bridgewater in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer.
W&L (4-4-1 overall, 3-3 in the ODAC) outshot the Eagles 33-3. Bridgewater's record slipped to 0-11, 0-7.
