SARA offering rape support group

The SARA Program (Sexual Assault Response and Awareness) will begin a seven-week session of the Rape Survivor Support Group.

There is no fee for the group that meets on Tuesday evenings beginning Oct. 11 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

People interested in attending the group must contact either Teresa Berry or Susan Shone at (703) 345-7273 for an interview.

Roanoke girl wins theater tickets

Carolyn Ramsey of Roanoke recently won two season tickets to Mill Mountain Theatre during the theater's London Raffle fundraiser. Ramsey is 12 years old.

Mill Mountain raised about $16,000 in the raffle.

Christmas parade accepting entries

The Vinton Chamber of Commerce is now accepting entries for the Vinton Christmas Parade. The parade will be held Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.

Marching units, decorated floats, clowns and novelty units are welcome. Cash prizes will be awarded.

There is a $15 entry fee; deadline is Nov. 18.

MDA raises $22,000 at lock-up

Wayne Nicely and his co-workers at AES of Roanoke Inc. recently won top fundraising honors in the 1994 CITGO/Salem Lock-Up to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The campaign raised a total of $22,000.

Mark Hancock of First Virginia Bank-Southwest was the second top fundraiser. The third highest fundraiser was Tim Gearheart of Associates Financial Services.

Funds raised in the lock-up will provide services in the Roanoke area.

Regional MS group needs spokespeople

The Blue Ridge chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is recruiting volunteers interested in becoming public relations spokespeople.

Spokespeople will be responsible for cultivating media ties in their communities and for giving local talks on multiple sclerosis.

Training will be provided. A general interest in journalism or public speaking is required.

\ Roanokers place in photography show

Several Roanoke residents recently participated in the Lynchburg Area Juried Photography Show.

Robert Sulkin received the News and Advance Ripley Award to "Modern Methods, a Survey: Readymade (for Duchamp)." Gregory Banks received the Progress Printing Co. Award for "Martin and Weston." Rebecca Graham Talbot won the Advertising Design Inc. award for "The View."

Photos will be on display at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center are through Sunday.

City holds annual plant give-away

Roanoke will hold its 16th annual flower give-away on Oct. 14 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Free plants from the city flower beds, as well as from hanging baskets used in downtown Roanoke, will be distributed on a first-come basis from the parking lot of the Roanoke Civic Center parking lot. Marilyn Arbogast, Roanoke's horticulturalist, said residents must bring their own boxes or bags.

The city also will give away water lilies on Tuesday for the fourth year. The lilies are from the ponds in Elmwood Park. Distribution will start at 10 a.m., and recipients should bring a large container or wet newspapers.

Distribution dates could change if there is an early frost. To confirm the dates or for more information, call 981-2630.

Electrical council re-elects members

James E. Robertson of Roanoke has been re-elected for the 12th year as president of the International Union of Electrical Workers Local 161 Retirees Council.

Also re-elected were: Gerald Moody of Roanoke, vice president, and Fred Farris of Salem, secretary-treasurer.

Kiwanians make bear donations

The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke Valley has presented a supply of "trauma bears" to the Cave Spring and Clear Brook rescue squads as part of its "Children - Priority One" program.

Rescue workers give the bears to children for comfort during emergency situations.

Each rescue squad got 75 bears.

Church needs party volunteers

Pilgrim Baptist Church is seeking volunteers to help with the Roanoke Valley Children's Party '94 to be held Oct. 31 at the Roanoke Civic Center.

The party committee meets each Thursday at 6 p.m. at the church, 1415 Eighth St. N.W.
