Cattle sale

DUBLIN - The New River Valley Polled Hereford Association in conjunction with the Virginia Polled Hereford Association will sponsor it annual sale Saturday, Oct. 15, 1 p.m. at the New River Valley Fairgrounds on Virginia 100 off I-81 exit 98. Association members will offer at the auction heifers, cow and calf pairs and bulls.

Polled Herefords are setting the pace as the nation's seed-stock producers respond to cattlemen's demands for cost-efficient, hardy and adaptable cattle, according to the association.

The meat Animal Research Center and university research show that Polled Hereford breeding can save cattle producers as much as $55 per year per head in feed costs.

World Food Day

BLACKSBURG - The annual World Food Day teleconference will be presented on Oct. 14 at noon in Wallace Hall on the Virginia Tech Campus. The first hour of the teleconference features a discussion by international experts on water issues, the second will be a discussion of state and local water issues.

Private water users will have the opportunity to have their water tested for pH, hardness and nitrates after the program. Those wanting a more complete test may bring a pint of water to test for a $15 fee.

`Bach's Lunch'

BLACKSBURG -The "Bach's Lunch" concert series at Virginia Tech's Memorial Chapel resumes Wednesday, Oct. 12, with music by Sound Advice, a five-member a capella vocal ensemble. The concert runs from noon to 1 p.m., and those attending may bring a lunch.

Industry council

WYTHEVILLE - The October meeting of the New River-Mount Rogers Private Industry Council has been rescheduled to Oct. 27, 9 a.m., at the Ramada Inn.

Alpha Delta Kappa

BLACKSBURG - Alpha Delta Kappa Founder's Day for the Southwest District will be Saturday, Oct. 15, at Virginia Tech's Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center.

The hostess for the event will be Rho Chapter, one of 12 chapters in the Southwest District. Calvert Poole, president of the chapter will preside.

Sue Burgess, Virginia Alpha Delta Kappa vice president and superintendent of King William County schools will be the featured speaker. She will discuss "Women of Distinction."

Ina Dunford will conduct the Founder's Day service. The Montgomery County Boys Choir, under the direction of Lynn Whitescarver, will provide the entertainment.

Homecoming parade

BLACKSBURG -Eighty-five groups are expected to participate in Virginia Tech's homecoming parade Saturday. Marching bands, floats, clowns and other units will be involved in the celebration before the football game with Temple University.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Blacksburg Middle School. The route will follow Main Street to the campus mall and end at Burruss Hall.
