WKEX `GOSPEL TIME' ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION SUNDAY

14-K, WKEX (1430 AM) opens its doors at 1501 Lark Lane in Blacksburg on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. in honor of the 14th anniversary of "GOSPEL TIME" with the Rev. Carl Ratcliffe of Riner. "I have always loved gospel music," said Ratcliffe, 60, who plays the mandolin in his own group, the Gospel Strings. He has also written a couple of dozen gospel songs himself.

Several gospel groups, including the Gospel Strings, are set to perform Sunday, and, of course, visitors can enjoy refreshments.

Ratcliffe's show began as a 30-minute stint Sundays. It now airs Saturdays and Sundays, 7 to 8:30 a.m., offering a blend of gospel and bluegrass and occasionally featuring live music by area gospel groups. Ratcliffe takes requests from listeners at 951-9539 (WKEX).

A fixture in the local gospel music scene, Ratcliffe organizes the free gospel sings at the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers union hall in Fairlawn each month and a couple of benefit concerts each year. He's also the pastor of Riner Grace Brethren Church on Virginia 8.

"I love what I'm doing," he said.
