EX-GLOBETROTTER TO SPEAK AT STRAIGHT ST. BANQUET

Harlem Globetrotters basketball legend turned evangelist MEADOWLARK LEMON is the featured speaker at Straight Street's 4th annual fund-raiser banquet, Sunday, Oct. 16, 1:30 p.m., at Custom Catering, 902 Patrick Henry Drive, Blacksburg.

Tickets are $15 per person and $25 per couple, available from Straight Street, 381-1006, at at local Christian bookstores.

The man who originated the no-look wrap-around pass and the half-court hook shot during his two decades from 1957 until 1979 as "The Clown Prince of Basketball" also plans other New River Valley appearances.

Saturday, Oct. 15, 1-3 p.m., he signs autographs at New River Valley Mall. Next Sunday evening at 6, he'll give his testimony and sink the first goal during Riverview Baptist Church's gymnasium dedication in Ripplemead.

Since retiring from - then rejoining - the Globetrotters, the 6-foot-3-inch Lemon, a native of Wilmington, N.C, has become an ordained minister and runs Meadowlark Ministries in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Rev. KATHERINE L. CARPENTER is the new associate pastor at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. A 1982 graduate of the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond and Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Carpenter was ordained earlier this year. She served for several years as a Christian educator in Greensboro, N.C., been active in youth leadership in North Carolina and New Jersey and has published a book on youth ministry.

SHORT TAKES

Construction on a Habitat for Humanity house in Christiansburg now is set to begin Oct. 29. Several New River Valley and Roanoke Valley Presbyterian congregations have joined forces to finance the project and provide volunteers.
