HOSPITAL, TECH GET ENERGY GRANT

Giles Memorial Hospital and Virginia Tech have been awarded energy conservation grants by the Department of Mines, Mineral and Energy as part of its Institutional Conservation Program.

The grant money is from federal and state oil overcharge refunds. The projects will save money by reducing annual energy costs. Participating institutions provide matching funds for their projects which should pay for themselves in about six years.

Giles Memorial Hospital was awarded $34,786 to install energy efficient fluorescent lights in the main hospital. The hospital will save more than $12,000 a year, according to the project manager, Darryl Ferrell, director of maintenance and safety.

Virginia Tech received a $100,000 grant to install efficient motors and variable speed drives in Derring Hall. The university expects to save more than $62,000 in annual energy costs, according to project manager, F. Spencer Hall, assistant vice president for facilities.
