GUNSHOTS KILLED WOMAN

Gunshots killed the 42-year-old Southwest Virginia woman whose decomposed body was discovered by state police Thursday in the Jefferson National Forest, according to preliminary autopsy reports.

At least one gunshot hit Dolly Rose Grigsby in the chest, said Dr. David Oxley, deputy chief medical examiner for Western Virginia. Oxley would not comment on how many times Grigsby had been shot or what type of gun was used.

State police have charged Grigsby's husband, Richard, in the slaying but have not released details on a possible motive.

On July 19, Richard Grigsby told police that he and his wife traveled from their home in Pilgrims Knob in Buchanan County to a shopping mall in Mercer County, W.Va. Dolly Grigsby went into the mall to shop; Richard Grigsby said he remained in the car, police said.

When his wife did not return, Grigsby filed a missing-person report with the West Virginia State Police. Since then, law-enforcement agents from West Virginia and Virginia had been searching for Dolly Grigsby. Richard Grigsby had offered a reward for her return, police said.

Wednesday, working on a tip from a friend of Richard Grigsby's, investigators were led to a pile of rocks near a ravine in the Tub Run area of Craig County's federally protected woods. In a makeshift grave was a body, later identified as Dolly Grigsby's. The autopsy showed that her body had been placed there more than a month ago.

Late Thursday, Virginia State Police charged Richard Grigsby with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond in the Botetourt County Jail. His brother, Ken Grigsby, is charged with being an accessory before the crime, and Mickey Breeding is charged with being an accessory after the crime.
