NEW YORK - Eastman Kodak Co. said Friday it will pay $8million and sink tens of millions more into its Rochester, N.Y., manufacturing plant to settle allegations it mishandled hazardous wastes.
The Environmental Protection Agency had found that sewer lines at the plant, many of them more than 40 years old, were deteriorating and may have been leaking such wastes as methylene chloride, xylene and toluene.
The 2,200-acre complex employs more than 20,000 people in 400 buildings. Among other things, it makes photographic products and food supplements. Under the agreement, announced Friday, Kodak must upgrade 31 miles of sewers and correct various environmental violations.
The EPA said the settlement will improve the water in the Genesee River and the air in northwestern New York. Kodak has been at the site for 104 years.

USAir pilots stop cost-cutting talks
The USAir pilots union broke off talks aimed at cutting the airline's payroll costs after the company said it would reduce its fleet and try to sell some of its bigger jets.
The union was angered by the move, which would mean that pilots who flew those jets would have to take lower-paying jobs flying smaller jets.
The pilots broke off talks Thursday. A USAir spokeswoman on Friday said the airline will resume talks when there is a ``meaningful proposal to discuss.'' The talks are crucial to USAir's plan to cut its expenses by $1 billion a year to better compete with lower-fare airlines that have started flying on the East Coast, a USAir stronghold.
