NS film to show trespass dangers

Two scenes from a Norfolk Southern Corp. film on the dangers of trespassing on railroad property will be shot in Roanoke Monday and Tuesday.

The film, a cooperative effort of the NS safety and public relations departments, will feature interviews with six engineers who have been involved in trespassing accidents, all but one resulting in fatalities. It also will feature re-enactments of four actual accidents.

The film crew from Hr Productions of Washington, D.C., will shoot a scene Monday in Wasena Park of teen-agers - portrayed by Virginia Tech drama students - partying on the tracks. One teen-ager is killed when he passes out on the tracks, according to the script.

A second scene, in which two children get their mo-ped stuck on the tracks and jump out of the way when the train is only 50 feet away, will be shot Tuesday at the Tinker Creek trestle near Vinton. Actors will be NS employees and their children.

Stock offering completed for thrift

Southwest Virginia Saving Bank said Friday that SWVA Bancshares Inc., the holding company for the Roanoke thrift, has completed its initial stock offering, worth $5.7 million, in connection with its conversion from a mutual, or depositor-owned thrift, to a shareholder-owned stock company.

The company's president, B.L. Rakes, said 570,590 shares of common stock were sold at $10 per share. Proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes. Initially, he said, the money will be used to purchase short-term investment securities.

Southwest Virginia's plan to convert to a stock company was approved by Southwest Virginia's voting members at a special meeting Sept. 27.

The stock will be listed over-the-counter through the National Daily Quotation System "Pink Sheets."
