HERITAGE?

A ROANOKE reader whose letter appears on today's Opinion page accuses U.S. Sen. Charles Robb of being ignorant of, or slanting the truth about, our Southern heritage.

Worse than that, Robb is comparable to Abraham Lincoln.

The letter-writer may be forgiven for being apparently unaware that the senator, far from being a traitor to the cause, has taken to wearing a Confederate-flag tie.

Indeed, so should the rest of us be forgiven our ignorance of Robb's new fashion choice; the tie, in fact, may exist only in the mind of Robb's challenger from the party of Lincoln, Oliver North.

The incumbent recently criticized North for saying nice things about the Confederate battle standard, a reference Robb called "divisive."

But, when asked at a campaign appearance the other day if he would "personally promote" the Confederate flag, North replied: "I do not."

Then he added: "In fact, quite frankly, Chuck Robb was wearing a Confederate tie the day he criticized me."

Quite frankly, we aren't sure what a Confederate tie is. But we weren't surprised to learn that Robb, when apprised of North's comment, insisted he owns no such thing and has never worn one.

Lincoln probably would have issued a similar denial.
