FLEMING GIVES ALBEMARLE THE GUNN

William Fleming's football team finally got on the winning side of the ledger Friday night, thanks to reserve running back Daniel Gunn.

The senior got the call less than two minutes into the game, when starting tailback Rafig Majied was carried from the field with a possible broken leg. Gunn rushed for 205 yards on 29 carries and scored the first touchdown as the Colonels downed Albemarle 14-3 in a non-district game at Victory Stadium.

Gunn scored on a 25-yard run up the middle to complete a 69-yard march by Fleming (1-5). Before Gunn's touchdown, the big gainer during drive had been a 15-yard face-mask penalty against the Patriots (2-4).

Fleming scored its other touchdown just before the half, after Albemarle fumbled on its 18-yard line. On the second play after the turnover, Shannon Wilson scrambled to avoid the Patriots' rush and found Charles Burnette wide open for an 18-yard scoring strike.

Albemarle never threatened in the second half, other than a 24-yard field goal by Craig Settimo. Meanwhile, the Colonels had one threat cut off by an interception in the end zone. The game ended with Fleming on the Albemarle 2.

Fleming's defense was tough the first half, permitting just one first down.

Cave Spring 28

Rockbridge County 7

Anthony Woollums rushed for 166 yards and scored on a 93-yard run to lead the Knights past the Wildcats in a non-district game.

Cave Spring, the fourth-ranked team in Timesland, dominated the Group AA Wildcats (2-4) by scoring all four touchdowns on the ground.

Four running backs reached the end zone for the Knights (4-1) and two other apparent touchdowns were called back because of penalties.

Woollums got Cave Spring started by bolting 93 yards for a score in the first quarter. Quarterback Jeff Lang completed six of 10 passes, but was intercepted twice.

Cave Spring limited Rockbridge County to five first downs and 110 yards of total offense.

William Byrd 21

LOW MOOR - The Mountaineers marched 78 yards in the final three minutes for the winning points in a Blue Ridge District victory over the Terriers.

Cook ran for 93 yards and Donald Downing had 106 yards and a touchdown as the Mountaineers (3-3 overall, 1-1 in the district) kept to the ground.

The key play during Alleghany's decisive drive was a 33-yard pass from Jason Boggs to Billy Siple that put the ball at the William Byrd 31. Downing and Cook took over and ran it in from there.

William Byrd (2-3, 0-2) had scored with 3:29 left on a 10-yard pass from Matt Bryant to Michael Berry.
