GLASS TURNS TABLES ON PH

After a lackluster first half, E.C. Glass responded in its homecoming football game with Patrick Henry on Friday night.

The Hilltoppers (6-0) scored 32 consecutive points after falling behind 12-0 and won 39-20 in a non-district game at City Stadium.

Glass, ranked No.3 in the state Group AAA poll, scored on its first possession of the second half to take a 15-12 lead after stopping the Patriots on their first possession.

The defensive stand by the Hilltoppers set the tone for the second half after the Patriots had outgained Glass 176-99 in the first half. The Hilltoppers outgained Patrick Henry 234-115 in the second half.

After building its early lead, Patrick Henry (3-2) shot itself in the foot with five penalties for 45 yards and two lost fumbles, both in the second half, which led to 10 Glass points.

``Penalties and fumbles,'' said Ed Scott, Patrick Henry's coach. ``Move the ball and we'd go back. Move the ball and we'd go back. Move the ball and we'd go back. That first possession after halftime was the most critical point of the game to me.''

Andre Kendrick, the Hilltoppers' quarterback, scored fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 5 and 49 yards as Glass outscored the Patriots 24-8 in the final quarter. Kendrick had nine carries for 108 yards.

Chris Matthews also reached the 100-yard mark for the Hilltoppers, rushing 13 times for 101 yards and one touchdown.

``Their quarterback is a good athlete ... their quarterback was the other side of it [in addition to the fumbles and penalties],'' Scott said.

Donnie Smith, the Patriots' quarterback, completed nine of 23 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Tight end Chris Combs had two catches - one of them an 80-yard touchdown - for 104 yards.

``[Smith] has really improved,'' said Bo Henson, Glass' coach. ``We geared up all week for stopping the run, and he killed us with his passing in the first half. Doggone it, he had a great game.''

Smith threw for 137 yards in the first half. But in the second half, the Hilltoppers clamped down on him, recording five sacks. Glass had seven for the game.

On the ground, Patrick Henry found the going tough the entire game with 37 rushes for 80 yards.
