ALLEGHANY BEATS CLOCK, NORTHSIDE

Tanya Holmes' desperation shot was waved off, and Alleghany came out of the Northside gym with a 51-50 Blue Ridge District win Thursday night.

The Mountaineers (7-5, 2-0) scored nine unaswered points to end the second quarter and take a three-point lead into the locker room. Tasha Chapman led all scorers with 17 points, and Katie Craft pitched in 11 to help Alleghany stay undefeated in district play.

Alleghany started to pull ahead in the second half, running the score to 43-34 with 4:56 left in the game, before the Vikings (3-7, 0-2) started their comeback in part to Terri Craig's 11 points.

Tanya Holmes, who led Northside with 13 points, converted a stolen Mountaineer inbound pass with 35 seconds left to give the Vikings their first lead since the second quarter, 50-49.

Karra Slaughter went the length of the court and sank a jump shot from just inside the free-throw line to restore the Mountainers' advatage at 51-50.

The Vikings had two last chances to regain the lead, but failed. Amy Heath, who had 11 points, grabbed an offensive rebound, but her shot rolled in and out of the basket and into the Mountaineers' hands.

Northside fouled Slaughter after the rebound. She missed her one-and-one oppurtunity, giving the Vikings one last chance.
