CAROLINAS TEAM TAKES EARLY LEAD

The Carolinas team rode the backs of a pair of seniors - Cliff Cunningham of Monroe, N.C., and Sid Woody of Gastonia, N.C. - to a 47-25 lead after Friday's first day of competition in the annual Virginias-Carolinas Cup Team Matches held at the Virginia Golf Club in Bristol.

Cunningham and Woody combined for an 8-under-par 64 in four-ball play to defeat Virginia's Moss Beecroft and Wayne Jackson 6-0. Also scoring a shutout for the Carolinas was the regular-division team of Paul Simson and Robbie Kramer, which routed the Virginia duo of Tony DeLuca and Steve Fox 6-0.
