STEVEN G. HANES of Roanoke has been promoted to director of Norfolk Southern Corp.'s police force. He will be responsible for the department's 260 employees, who are based in 53 locations in 18 states to provide police and security for the 14,600-mile rail system.
Hanes was a police officer in Portsmouth, Ohio, before joining Norfolk and Western Railway's police department in 1973. Norfolk and Western became part of Norfolk Southern in 1982.
For the past five years, Hanes has been Norfolk Southern's division chief of police in Roanoke.
ACCOUNTING
COLLEEN M. MARSTON has joined McLeod & Co., a Roanoke certified public accounting firm. Marston was previously a senior associate with Coopers & Lybrand in Richmond. In her new position, she will be specializing in employee benefits and client accounting services.
BANKING
At Salem Bank & Trust, CHARLES W. MANESS JR. has been named senior vice president/loan administration and will be responsible for the bank's overall loan operations. PAM JONES has been appointed credit review officer. She was formerly with Central Fidelity Bank. JOHN D. KELLY has been appointed real estate/construction loan officer. He was previously manager of the bank's Hollins branch office. J. CHRIS CONNER has been named branch manager of the Hollins office. He formerly worked in the credit department, and before that was employed by Dominion Bankshares Corp. EDIE SAUNDERS has been named branch officer and is the manager of the South Salem office. She previously worked at the West Main Street office. FRANKYE SHROPSHIRE has been named assistant vice president/data processing and operations. She's been with the bank since it opened in 1978. DIANNE ARANT has been named manager of the bookkeeping department. She's been with the bank more than 11 years.
COLLEGES
PETER C. LEFFERTS has been named vice president for student affairs at Ferrum College. Lefferts comes to Ferrum from Mary Washington College, where he was associate dean of students. He will be responsible for overall direction of Ferrum's residence program, student activities, admissions and financial aid operations. Also at the college, PAUL AMBROSE HARMAN JR. has been appointed chaplain. He was in campus ministry for 14 years at Slippery Rock State College in Pennsylvania before coming to Ferrum.
CONTRACTORS
CYNTHIA WALKER and TODD PEACOCK have joined the staff of Branch & Associates Inc. as project managers. Walker comes to Branch from Shannon, Strobel & Weaver Constructors and Engineers of Auburn, Ala. Peacock previously worked with the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission in Marion, where he was an associate planner. He also was the town manager of Fries. Walker and Peacock will be responsible for project coordination, scheduling and operations for the highway construction company.
FINANCIAL SERVICES
DONNA FLEENOR has joined Virginia Asset Financing Corp. as a loan officer. She will be responsible for the corporation's small-business loan portfolio in the Roanoke and Southwestern Virginia area. Fleenor, who has more than 20 years' banking experience, comes to the company from First Union National Bank in Bristol, where she had been vice president of commercial banking, managing the commercial loan portfolio. She was formerly assistant vice president and credit officer with Dominion Bankshares Corp.

At Westvaco Corp. in Covington, A.G. CHAUDHRY has been promoted to recovery and pulp mill manager. He was formerly pulp mill superintendent. FRANK OWENS, formerly maintenance superintendent, has become production services manager. DAVID W. WHITE, CARL A. CROOKSHANKS and BEN L. HICKS have been promoted to superintendents within the production services group. White will have responsibility for the electrical, instrument and computer services departments; Crookshanks has become maintenance superintendent with responsibility for the West Mill operations; and Hicks has become maintenance superintendent in charge of East Mill operations.

ROBERT L. ALLBRITTON has been elected executive vice president and chief operating officer of Allbritton Communications Co. in Washington, D.C. Allbritton, who is now vice president and director of the company, will assume his new duties Nov. 1. Allbritton Communications owns WSET-TV in Lynchburg and Roanoke.
MICHAEL KELLY has been named director of sales of WJPR FOX 21 in Lynchburg and WFXR FOX 27 in Roanoke.
MEDICINE
DR. MARK A. McBRIDE has joined Physicians to Children Inc. in Roanoke for the practice of pediatrics. McBride is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He most recently worked with Eskimo children in rural Alaska.

THEODORE WIERZBIC of Roanoke has been promoted to technical services manager at J. Crew, a mail-order catalog company in Lynchburg. Wierzbic began his employment with J. Crew as a systems programmer in 1992. Before that, he worked for IBM as a software engineer.
