The Carolina regular division did most of the damage in Saturday's head-to-head single matches by outscoring their counterparts 361/2-111/2. Fieldale's Keith Decker carded the Virginias' lone regular division victory by beating Larry Penley 21/2-1/2.
The Carolinas team needs only 13 points during today's alternate shot to clinch the championship.
Salem's Don Foster posted a 3-0 win over Les Swanner in the senior division. Roanoke's Mike Smith lost to Larry Boswell 3-0 in regular division play.
Saturday's play featured Carolinas Amateur champion Steve Slayden blanking Virginia Amateur champion Scott Inman 3-0, and South Carolina Amateur champ Bert Atkinson beat West Virginia Amateur champion Steve Fox 21/2-1/2.

The Virginia Tech doubles team of Miki Pusztai and Andrew Krafft advanced to the third round before losing in the Flight A doubles division at a collegiate men's tennis tournament in Blacksburg. Pusztai and Krafft defeated UNC Charlotte's Mark Baer and Dennis Hendrickson 8-4 and Florida's Jon Glover and David Balogh 8-6. They lost to Samford's Pieter Calitz and Fernando Diaz 8-2.
In singles play, Mark Tepes and Chirayu Patel were eliminated in the third round. Tepes lost to Florida's Jon Glover 7-5, 6-2 and Patel lost to Georgia State's Murray Lokusundaram 6-1, 6-2.
Salem's Carol and Marsha Grey lost to the Illinois tennis duo of Teresa McNeela and Carolyn Sitkiewicz 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation round of the Prince Cup Amateur Doubles Tournament in Amelia Island, Fla.
In Baltimore, Che Henderson and Ian Spooner scored goals and goalkeeper Chris Barrett posted his fourth shutout of the season to lead Radford to a 2-0 win over Maryland Baltimore County in a Big South Conference men's soccer match. Henderson knocked in a pass from Ryan Scott at the 12-minute, 56-second mark of the first half to give the Highlanders (7-4-1, 2-1) the only score they would need. Spooner, who was fourth in the nation in scoring last week, headed in a throw-in from Rick Lodge in the second half for his 14th goal of the year. UMBC is 5-6-1, 1-3-1.
Rich Daughtridge had only the second hat trick in VMI history as his three goals gave the Keydets a 3-1 victory over Marshall in a Southern Conference men's soccer match in Lexington. Daughtridge's six points tied him with three other players for the second-highest single-match total in VMI history. The victory was the first for VMI (3-6-1, 1-2) against a Division I opponent this season. Marshall is 3-8-1, 1-3.
Jeb Wofford scored two goals and assisted another to lead Washington and Lee to a 3-1 victory over Dickinson College in a men's soccer match at Dickinson, Pa. The Generals are 4-3-2.
Chris Cupo scored two goals and Kevin Chenosky had two assists in Ferrum's 3-0 men's soccer victory over Bridgewater. Panthers goalkeeper Stevie Reynolds, a former standout at Franklin County High School, had nine saves in posting his third shutout of season. Ferrum is 4-7-1, Bridgewater is 0-12.
Evan Whitson had a goal and an assist as Virginia Wesleyan defeated Roanoke College 3-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer match. Roanoke is 7-6, 5-2; Wesleyan is 12-0-1, 5-0.
Nicole Methena scored on an assist from Beth Coughlin with 9 minutes to play to lift Hollins to a 2-1 win over Wesleyan in a women's soccer match played at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. After a scoreless first half, Hollins (3-9) fell behind 1-0 early in the second half before getting the tying goal from Ashley Solcher.
Hollins plays Agnes Scott today at noon.
Freshman Erica Reineke scored two goals and freshman goalkeeper Delia Coyle registered six saves as Washington and Lee beat Guilford 5-1 in a women's soccer match in Lexington. The Generals are 6-3.
In Baltimore, Shannon Bagrosky scored on a 35-yard free kick midway through the first half, snapping a 1-1 tie and sending Maryland Baltimore County to a 2-1 win Big South Conference women's soccer triumph over Radford. Radford tied the game on a goal from Melissa Gaitka after Shelley Maurer had put the Terriers on top 1-0. Bagrosky's game-winner was deflected by Radford goalie Lexi Thomasson and rolled into the goal. Radford is 3-9-1, 0-3, UMBC is 8-3, 4-1.
In Richmond, Nicole Menke and Sara Mumford each scored in the shootout period to give Radford's field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Richmond, the Highlanders' third straight win and their first in the Colonial Athletic Association this season. With the score tied 1-1 after regulation play and two sudden death overtimes, Radford (6-6, 1-3) notched two shootout goals. Amy Dolan gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Richmond (4-6, 1-1) tied it on a Kate Miller goal.
Kevin Nolan set a course record and Bethany Eigel won the girls' competition to lead Christiansburg to a sweep of the Blue Demon Invitational cross country meet.
Nolan covered the 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 9 seconds to pace five Demons in the top 10. Eigel was timed in 20:42 to lead five Christiansburg runners in the top 10.
Blacksburg's Sarah Hendricks was the individual winner of the Eagle Invitational cross country meet in Warrenton. Hendricks covered the 3.5-mile course in 22:20 to finish 40 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack. Blacksburg's Amy Feuerbach finished ninth.
Virginia's men and women both finished third in their respective divisions of the Furman Invitational cross country meet in Greenville, S.C. The Cavalier men were led by Andrew Carnahan's ninth-place finish in scoring 117 points and finishing behind Wake Forest (45) and Auburn (56). Astrid Gotthardt finished seventh overall for Virginia's women, who tallied 82 points to finish behind Auburn (37) and Clemson (80).
Paige Kerry's goal in the first overtime lifted Virginia Wesleyan to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Roanoke College in Virginia Beach. Roanoke (6-3-1, 5-1 ODAC) had led after Meredith Arnott's first-half penalty kick for a goal until Virginia Wesleyan (10-1-0, 7-0) tied the match with less than 10 minutes remaining on Tatia Boskovich's score. Wesleyan outshot Roanoke 25-15.
