CAROLINAS TEAM CRUSHES VA. GOLFERS

The Carolinas team strolled away with the 1994 championship of the annual Virginias-Carolinas Cup Team Matches held at the Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, winning 148-68 Sunday.

The margin of victory is the second-highest in the 49-year-old competition, trailing a 90-point bulge in the 1970 event.

Carolinas teams won three of four senior events Sunday and six of eight regular division matches. Salem's Don Foster and Dan Keffer lost 5-1 to Clarence Moore and Bob Clark. Roanoker Mike Smith and his partner, Mike Krulich, lost 5-1 to Dean Channell and Chuck Tickle. Keith Decker of Fieldale and partner Gary Strickfaden lost 4-2 to Macon Moye and Keith Kepley.

In other sports in the region:

Radford finished eighth among 11 teams at the James Madison University Invitational Women's Golf Tournament in Staunton. Jennifer Kellogg was the Highlanders' top finisher, tying for 33rd with a 21-over 165.

Virginia's men's soccer team rallied for five second-half goals to beat Clemson 6-4 at Clemson, S.C.

A.J. Wood and Nate Friends had two goals each in the second half; Mike Fisher had the other. Before Sunday, Clemson (7-5 overall, 1-3 in the ACC) was 185-0 in games in which it scored four or more goals. UVa is 10-2 and 4-1.

Virginia's Kim Smith had a goal and an assist as the Cavaliers' women's soccer team beat Clemson 3-2 in Charlottesville.

Louise Christovich had one goal and one assist as the Hollins soccer team defeated Agnes Scott 3-2 in a non-conference match in Atlanta. Nicole Methena and Bryn Hess also scored for Hollins (4-9). Agnes Scott is 4-7.

Peg Boutilier scored as Virginia's field hockey team got its sixth shutout this year, 1-0 over Villanova at Villanova, Pa. Boutilier scored with nine minutes left as UVa improved to 8-6.

In Blacksburg, Virginia Tech won five of six singles titles in the Virginia Tech Invitational tennis tournament. Georgetown's Eiko Sakamoto beat Tech freshman Katherine Chen 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1. Tech winners were No. 2 Jen Dinello, No. 3 Cathy Dixon, No. 4 Julie Jackson, No. 5 Jen Lampert and No. 6 Daria Ivan.

In Atlanta, Virginia Tech's Andrew Krafft lost to Florida's Dyllan Fitzgerald 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinal round of the Flight A singles consolation round at the Georgia Tech Fall Classic.

In Richmond, the Roanoke Star Green under-12 boys won the premier division of the Columbus Day Tournament, beating the Atlantic Sharks 2-1 behind goals by Tim Hoelzle and Scott Hambrick. Goalie Michael Andres allowed three goals in four games as the Star went 3-0-1 over the weekend.

The Roanoke Star under-10 boys finished second in the tournament, losing 1-0 to Baltimore in the championship game. Will Gwaltney and Drew Murray led the Star on defense. The Star won two games to reach the championship game.
