The ship's saga is then discussed in math, science, social studies and English lessons.
Bob Holland's math students learn about different map types and how to use the coordinate system to find locations. They learn to use a compass and go outside to mark landmarks and navigate a short course.
The math class also adopted five humpback whales, giving them a closer link to the animals they study.
Brownie Cauley, the science teacher, explains food chains and webs and compares the scientific method used by the Mimi crew to other methods.
In social studies class with teacher Carolyn Cox, the students research endangered species, paleontology and land and water configurations. They also send and decode Morse code messages.
In Londa Matthews' English class, the students analyze the movie characters and their relationships. They keep a daily diary from the point of view of a Mimi crew member. The lesson also includes reading literature associated with environmental issues, survival themes and whales.
The study culminates this week with some unexpected troubles for the Mimi crew.
Montgomery County Public Schools announced the September seniors-of-the-month from the four district high schools.
Auburn High School: PETER J. POLIDORO is a member of the National Honor Society, both English and math academic competition teams, and was twice named an academic athlete.
Peter is the son of Roger and Gwynn Polidoro of Christiansburg.
Blacksburg High School: KRISTEN BOLING is president of the Spanish Club, participated in Virginia Girls State and the Student Council Association and served as junior class vice president.
Kristen is the daughter of Stephen and Paula Boling of Blacksburg.
Christiansburg High School: TODD A. JENNINGS is senior class vice president, president of the Student Council Association and is a four-year member of the cross country, soccer and indoor track teams.
Todd is the son of Bruce and Norma Jennings of Christiansburg.
Shawsville High School: BRANDY ALEXANDER is a member of the French Club, the varsity basketball team and is a four-year winner of the Who's Who Among American High School Students award and a three-year winner of the highest grade point average award.
Brandy is the daughter of Kemper and Barbara Alexander of Shawsville.
"Field of Dreams," Blacksburg High School's 1994 homecoming celebration, will begin with a parade at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, that will run from Blacksburg Baptist Church to the middle school. The festivities will continue at the football game when the Indians battle Graham High.
As part of an environmental study, students from the Independence Secondary School will plant fruit trees Thursday, Oct. 13, in Nellie's Cave Park Arboretum in Blacksburg.
The project, done in conjunction with the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department, emphasizes organizations working together to accomplish goals. The trees to be planted were donated by Lowe's of Christiansburg.
The students also will visit Pandapas Pond Friday, Oct. 14, for a nature tour.
Wade's Supermarkets and Montgomery County Public Schools will sponsor a fund-raising drive for the Montgomery County Home-School Communications System.
From Oct. 5 to Nov. 15, Wade's will issue gold cash register receipts to be collected by the local schools. Wade's will donate 2 percent of its gross sales on the collected receipts to the project.
The three participating stores are located on Roanoke Street in Christiansburg and on North and South Main streets in Blacksburg.
Montgomery County Public Schools established drop boxes in the community for all residents to donate receipts.

Christiansburg High School and its Parent Teacher Student Association will hold an open forum on character education Monday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the lower commons of the school.
Parents, students and teachers will discuss character issues and their effects on future successes.
The Pulaski Middle School Players will kick off the season presenting interpretations of Shel Silverstein poems to five Pulaski County elementary schools on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
They will offer a public performance Thursday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. Admission is $1.
Gilbert Linkous Elementary recently started a year-long book swap operated by the fourth-graders.
The school's pupils may bring in unwanted books to exchange for unread titles. Each week, the different grade levels may attend the swap on a designated day before school.

The Beeks Elementary Parent Teacher Association will sponsor an all-day shopping trip to Potomac Mills Outlet Mall Saturday, Nov. 5. Buses will leave the school at 6:30 a.m. and return about midnight.
The $40 fee includes a bagel breakfast and dessert on the trip home.

The Kipps Elementary Parent Teacher Association is sponsoring an ADOPT-A-CLASS PROGRAM that asks local businesses, organizations and individuals to make a tax-deductible, one-time $80 donation to the school.
The money will be distributed to one classroom in monthly installments of $10 to buy supplies and project materials.
