ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Home sales in the Roanoke Valley fell sharply in September. The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors said 325 houses were placed under contract last month, off 14.9 percent from 382 in August and down 15.8 percent from 386 a year ago. In the first nine months, 3,162 homes were sold, down 6.9 percent from 3,398 in the same 1993 period.

"I think the uncertainty about interest rates may have had some effect on September sales," said Tim Garrison, association president. "Now that rates have stabilized, I think we'll see home sales at their seasonal level."
